The novel Between Shades of Grey by Ruta Sepetys does an excellent job illustrating the troubling issue of child labor. The extent of child labor in a country is directly linked by the nature and extent of poverty within it. Child labor deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity. It is detrimental to physical and mental development. Today, there are an estimated 246 million child laborers around the globe. This irritating social issue is not only violates a nation’s minimum age laws , it also involves intolerable abuse, such as child slavery, child trafficking, debt bondage, forced labor, and illicit activities. In Between Shades of Grey , Lina and her ten year old brother are unrightfully charged 25 years of labor at a work camp in Siberia. Throughout time children have worked myriad hours in hazardous workplaces in order to make a few cents to a few dollars. This is known as child labor, where children are risking their lives daily for money. Today child labor continues to exist all over the world and even in the United States where children pick fruits and vegetables in difficult conditions. According to the article, “What is Child Labor”; it states that roughly 215 million children around the world are working between the ages of 5 and 17 in harmful workplaces. Child labor continues to exist because many families live in poverty and with more working hands there is an increase in income. Other families take their children to work in the fields because they have no access to childcare and extra money is beneficial to buy basic needs. Although there are laws and regulations that protect children from child labor, stronger enforcement is required because child labor not only exploits children but also has detrimental effects on a child’s health, education, and the people of the nation.
Throughout history, children have always worked, either as apprentices or servants. However, child labor reached a whole new scale during the time period of the Industrial Revolution. Throughout the time frame of late 1800s-early 1900s, children worked long hours in dangerous factory conditions for very little wages. They were considered useful as laborers because their small stature allowed them to be cramped into smaller spaces, and they could be paid less for their services. Many worked to help support their families, and by doing so, they forwent their education. Numerous nineteenth century reformers and labor groups sought to restrict child labor and to improve working conditions.

Between the 1800s and 1900s, many children worked in agricultural fields, fishing, mining, manufacturing, and even drug trade and prostitution. Children all over the world can be forced into indentured slavery, working for long hours with no pay. Some groups are taking action against this through legal action, while others are working to bring the problem to worldwide attention. As people desired to improve themselves through hard work and in other ways, the general standard of living improved around the nation. New ideas about health, patriotism, and many other cultural changes in people’s daily lives came about during the revolution. During this time, child labor was a rapidly growing aspect of many factories, because their mothers were entering the workforce in growing numbers. When the English common law emerged, it stated that the King had the ultimate authority over children, and; thus, children were seen as assets. Throughout centuries, children were considered “little adults,” and “property,” therefore, exploitation of children as laborers was a customary occurrence. In different parts of the world, at different stages of histories, laboring of child has been a part of economic life. Living in the United States of America, in 2017, children go to school to learn and eventually to become adults then obtain a job and go to work. This is the norm for us and we could not imagine anything different. Prior to what we know to be modern America, children had been servants and apprentices for as long as anyone could remember but, during the industrial revolution, “18% of all American workers were under the age of 16”.
