Trigger words in society today could be vulgar, lewd, obscene, suggestive or plain out and right indecent. Some of these words you hear every day one example is the word, bitch. It’s ok to say bitch when referring to reference of a female dog. Or complaining as in to whine constantly about an issue. Or too say bitchn used to describe something cool back in the day. But saying bitch as in you’re a bitch to a woman is lewd, spiteful and malicious. Another word that triggers people is ass. You can say you made an ass of yourself today or spectacle, but saying your ass is perfect is a senseless derogatory remark. Setting off people’s anger and returned remarks of more trigger words. An example, when applied to a person, "Mark is an asshole” is considered much more derogatory than that of “Mark is an ass". I think if you accidentally peak or utter something biased or trigger someone’s emotions you should; should let them react and finish their emotional reaction to your statement, then try using another word and reiterate your intentions to a more agreeable word set and continue your discussion. When triggered by a bias word, we sometimes experience an array of emotions including dissatisfaction, anger, resentment, insecurity, or enviousness. We may have emotional outbursts and be unable to express ourselves appropriately. As a result, we develop coping skills and habits that can create interpersonal conflict. Or we act in a indirect way of expressing negative feelings instead of openly addressing them to others. Or we even stop communicating with others all together. These cause us to accept self-defeating habits become patterns that later will produce emotional stress, drain our energy, and influence how we live and
A trigger warning is most commonly found on internet articles, and blogs. It serves the purpose of warning the reader of any potentially triggering material that they may find offensive or may be sensitive toward due to post traumatic experiences in their life. They are essentially created to prevent readers from accidently encountering the material without some sort of warning. An example of this would be, an article that discusses the topic of self harm can cause unwanted flashbacks in a person that has personally experienced this themselves and would not like to be reminded of it, or an image included in an article that reminds a war veteran of the things that they saw while on deployment.

Some use the word as an endearment, and some use it as an insult. Some people believe that no one should use it, others believe that only blacks are allowed to use it. Some even believe that you can use it in private as long as you are not around people who it may offend. And then there are
Recently, more and more people began to concentrate on the problem of Free Speech. Lots of unnecessary troubles in campus were produced by free speech. Thus, the “trigger warnings”, which is a kind of way to prevent unnecessary troubles, are under ardent debate. Even some major media, such as the New York Times, began to focus on reporting the materials about trigger warnings. In the articles from American Now, authors Jennifer Medina, Brianne Richson and Jon Overton expressed their opinions about the trigger warnings, the ways to prevent unnecessary troubles, respectively. The trigger warnings are not very useful and helpful because it may increase the time to prepare for the class, make more troubles for students and full of flaws that could not eliminate the topics that students don’t want to see.
Both 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale are dystopian novels, however, these books are a lot more complex than mere portrayals of dystopia, it can be argued that they are explorations of dystopia rather than mere portrayals. In order to explore dystopia, many themes must be considered, such as; feminism, love and repression. Nonetheless, it is apparent that human characteristics are the driving point of the two novels, predominantly, the depiction of human resilience. In an imperfect world, it is important to have certain qualities which, if plentiful, it can mean success, whereas if it lacks, it can mean failure, this characteristic is resilience. The protagonists in each novel, Winston in 1984 and Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale face situations which leave them both in disarray, and both even consider suicide. The authors tentatively highlight human resilience, its limits and most importantly its strengths into the two novels.
Trigger warnings are becoming a widely used method to prevent offending or upsetting people. Trigger warnings are used to alert people of content that might set off a strong emotional reaction. The people who usually experience these experiences are people who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or anxiety. There are many more, but these two are the ones I will be focusing on. As a survivor of my own traumas, and an anxiety disorder so bad that my hair fell out, I want trigger warnings to be in the college environment.
As a young graduate student who never been to Congress, Woodrow Wilson criticized the founding fathers on the separation of powers. Between his first book, Constitutional Government, in 1884, and his second book, Constitutional Government in the United States, in 1908, Wilson shifted his position on important structural features of the constitutional system. The first changed Wilson did in Constitutional Government, was to define the term “constitution” which he ignored in his first book. Second, Wilson focused his study on the presidential power defined by the constitution and third he also realized that external forces are now shaping American politics more than the intentions of the founders.
The Hunger Games was a critically acclaimed movie when it came out; however, some critics would argue that the movie can be sometimes too violent for its intended audience. In this essay I would dissert Brian Bethune’s essay “Dystopia Now” in order to find its weaknesses and compare the movie Battle Royale with his essay.
Some experts think ideas for solving this problem would be setting limits on how much time you can check your email, social media, etc. An experiment with 200 people was done at the University of Maryland. They asked them to not use their technology all day, to see what the results of the people thought. Their experiment showed that quitting cold turkey is very difficult, but it makes them connect with people more. Technology is decreasing our time to have real conversations with people and enjoy and see stuff that we usually don’t.
“‘They score! Henderson has scored for Canada!’” Foster Hewitt wordlessly described” (Pelletier) when Paul Henderson scored the series-winning goal. This allowed Canada to win the 1972 Summit Series, a moment that no one would ever forget since it all happened during the climax of the Cold War. Prior to this, the Soviets had won the previous three Olympic gold metals since Canada could not use its NHL players. Thus, this provided Canada with the chance to play hockey against the USSR using its best players. This raised the question: if Canada were able to send its best players, would it still be enough to beat the Soviets? Everyone in Canada was certain that the Soviets would not win a single game, but little did they know they underestimated the extent of the Soviets abilities. Tied in the last few minutes of game eight, Canada had to score or they would lose the series. However, when Paul Henderson scored the game-winning goal, never before had a single sporting event meant so much to Canadians. Therefore, Paul Henderson’s goal is a defining moment for Canada in the twentieth century becauseit provided Canada with the opportunity to evolve hockey, proved that Canada and our democratic society were superior to the USSR and their communist society, and brought citizens together to unify Canada as a nation.
What does it mean to say the “N-word” both it in its original form, or as the “N-word’, and what is the context for the impact which occurs when it leaves the mouths of blacks and or whites. I begin with a look at ‘Teaching the N-Word” by Emily Bernard, she is a 30 year old African American professor who teaches at University of Vermont which happens to be a predominantly white institution. She works alongside her husband, a white man, who is also a professor of African American History ; her brother writes for The Source and urges her students to think about the ways in which the “N-word” is used in pop culture. How do we know when or how to change ourselves as people? Sometimes, we all need a shove from something or someone to help us better ourselves. The most dominant factors are kindness, fear, and regret. These three things can make us willing to go through the hassle and hard work of breaking out of a habit, whether it be putting your feet on the couch, or your attitude.
Scott Hightower’s poem “Father” could be very confusing to interpret. Throughout almost the entirety of the poem the speaker tries to define who his father is by comparing him to various things. As the poem begins the reader is provided with the information that the father “was” all of these things this things that he is being compared to. The constant use of the word “was” gets the reader to think ‘how come the speaker’s father is no longer comparable to these things?’ After the speaker reveals that his father is no longer around, he describes how his father impacted him. Details about the father as well as descriptions of the impacts the father has distraught on the speaker are all presented in metaphors. The repetitive pattern concerning the speaker’s father and the constant use of metaphors gives the reader a sense that the speaker possesses an obsessive trait. As the reader tries to interpret the seemingly endless amount of metaphors, sets of connotative image banks begin to develop in the reader’s mind. Major concepts that are expressed throughout the poem are ideas about what the speaker’s father was like, what he meant to the speaker, and how he influenced the speaker.
But in the 1960’s it was used as a compliment through rock ‘n’ roll and pop culture and was seen as empowering. But as woman started moving out of the kitchen and into the real world people found it easy to bring woman down by using the word bitch in the 2000’s. Because people still use the word bitch to demean women and try to bring them down. 65 percent of American women report experiencing being called names including bitch in their lifetimes.
