Recommended: The effects of plastic in the ocean

Walking upon the sidewalk of the streets, what do you see? Trash. 88% of the world’s surface is covered by plastic debris. How can you throw so much plastic in the street, even though there are so many trash cans near you? This is causing serious issues in many different ways. There are many people and many ways you can help people stop littering. Will you take action and help our planet? On September 23rd, 2016, Mrs. Near’s class walked around the field and the back of the school. Students noticed that there were many pieces of trash on the school property, including plastic bottles, soda cans, plastic grocery bags, cigarette butts, and fast food waste. Yes, it definitely can! Everyday, Tommy Kleyn picked up trash on the River Schie bank in the Netherlands. He took 30 minutes out of his day, every single day to pick up trash. He started doing this in October 2015, and he started, “Project Schone Schie”. He took before and after pictures of the riverbank, and posted it on social media. His post went viral very quickly, he got 30,000 likes on his page. Even the government helped him pick up the trash, which shows that he has had an extremely strong impact on the community around him and the fish living in the waters on the river. Water pollution is very serious. Water is a necessity to human life, and if the waters are being polluted, this is not beneficial to our water sources. 46% of America’s lakes and 40% of America’s rivers are too polluted for fishing, swimming, and aquatic life. How does this make you feel? Nearly ½ of lakes and rivers have too much pollution in them for organisms to survive. 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, stormwater, and industrial waste are dispersed into America’s waters annually. This is unsanitary and dangerous because water has many uses, and if it is not cleaned properly, it can cause many diseases.
