Historically, without methods like quantitative determination of β-human chorionic gonadotropin and transvaginal ultrasound, the majority of ectopic pregnancies were only diagnosed after the break, which often made it an extremely urgent situation. When the level of plasma hCG reaches approximately 1,500 mIU / mL, or 35 days from the date of the last menstrual period, the gestational sac is visualized inside the uterus by transvaginal route and is then compared to 3500 mIU / mL, during pelvic ultrasound. Transvaginal ultrasound is also used to diagnose blood in the abdomen, when its volume exceeds 100 ml. Transvaginal ultrasound can also help in measuring the dimensions of the tubes and the ovaries with high reliability.
