I am writing to you today in concern of the rising traffic congestions throughout the city of Toronto. This January, The Star released a news article titled, Toronto dominates list of worst traffic jams across Canada. This is incredibly concerning, because this could affect the way Canadians travel from point A to point B on Canadian roads. According to a new CAA study, bottlenecks, also known as the point of blockage, congestion, and gridlock, are costing drivers over 11.5 hours and 22 million litres of fuel annually. To add on, a portion of Hwy.401, which runs through central Toronto, has been deemed the ninth-most clogged artery in Canada and the United States according to the CAA. Congestion has gotten to a point at which Toronto traffic blockages are being compared to those found in New York city and Los Angeles. The Canadian Automobile Association has done extensive testing on nearly 3,000 kilometres of provincial and municipal roads. The traffic issues in Toronto are so bad that the city actually secured half of the spots in both the top 10 and top 20 of the CAA’s top 20 bottlenecks in the country. I have taken numerous trips to bustling Downtown Toronto, and the congestion issue was present approximately 80 percent of the time. During the weekends, on the earliest of mournings around 6 o’clock A.M., there were was an abundance of free lanes and no cars. However, at around 8 to 9 A.M. the traffic really builds up and on one of my holiday trips, we sat in traffic for over 30 minutes. It was not a pleasant experience, especially as we were already late to visit my cousin. I also had a pretty bad experience on one of my school trips last year. We were supposed to visit multiple sites around Downtown Toronto, but because we were stuck in traffic there and back, we lost precious time and lost around 25
