When my mom asked if I wanted to see this year’s Lakeside musical, I honestly was a bit unwilling. It’s not that I didn’t want to support my two or three friends up on stage and in the crew; I just don’t have a very good track record with high school performances. I’m a critic: I have always been very critical of myself, and very critical of others. I unwittingly judge the actors onstage, and end up feeling guilty because I probably could have done no better. On top of this warped superiority/inferiority was the nature of the musical they were performing; all throughout third grade I had been obsessed with the movie-musical Hairspray. I knew all the songs, most of the lines, and wasn’t sure if anyone could top Queen Latifah. But I was mistaken. …show more content…
Amber Von Tussle was a bit weak vocally, yet too strong in her dancing for her character. Seaweed and Little Inez were marvellous singers, however their acting could have used work. Tracy Turnblad, I will admit, is a hard role to play. She is one of those characters everyone knows and everyone expects; Tracy is almost always played the same way, and it is difficult to break out of the stereotype. Her vocals were great, and her acting matched the character. She could have been a better dancer, but overall, Natalie Rotolo pulled off the role. The chorus may have been a bit weak vocally, but they made up for it with their energy. The kids of the “Corny Collins’ Show” were perfectly cast with their huge ironic grins, and the record shop ensemble was energetic and played well off of Motormouth. Contrastingly, the “Dynamites” were very strong musically, though their dancing could have been more animated. However, overall, I really enjoyed the performance. Even as a Hairspray conniseur and snooty arts school student that I am, I thought it was fantastic. In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. In the prologue of Friday Night Lights, by H.G. Bissinger, football team, Panther, has players who have fears/problems to overcome before a important game with their biggest rival the Midland Lee. The main characters include Boobie Miles who had dealt with a tragic accident on his knee the last game he played causing him to get surgery leading him to not play as well as he did before, Jerrod McDougal who knows he can’t make a collage team because of his height, Mike Winchell who lives in poverty with his mother, Ivory Christian who has a love/hate relationship with football, and Brian Chavez who is a gifted football player and student being on top in every class.
The Power of an Author Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey. Introducing a character that will be seen in the story is one of the most vital parts when creating a piece of literature.
Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. ...te Choir did a very poor job with emotional projection (tone); they never smiled or even suggested a hint of feeling in their voices. I found that this made their performance somewhat uninteresting because it wasn’t relatable or something that made me curious. It think that the conductor did a good job making sure that the choir watched her and she guided them through the songs, but I thought it was a bad idea she joined them in the mambo during “One Goal”. The choir did a good job holding up their harmonies and staying in tune. I think that if this choir had a better knowledge and understanding of dynamics it would have made their performance a lot better, especially if they had taken chances. I wish that this choir would have annunciated more so that we could hear the message that they were trying to convey. Still, I think that the choir did respectably overall.
The sound design and choreography intensified the overall musical. They created the time, place, and mood through rhythm and great energy. The actors had wireless, behind the ear mikes, that attached to the mike pack which amplified the sound, making it very clear. I could easily understand what they were talking about or singing.
On a Wednesday night I saw Texas State Theatre and Dance Department's performance of A Chorus Line. The main plot of the musical entails the audition of 17 dancers for several Broadway roles on the chorus line. However, during their auditions the director Zach asks for personal stories of each dancer's life. Though the plot of this musical is seemingly simple in its twist on the traditional audition, it explores themes that reveal the human experience, the search for individuality, and the sense of self.
For a college production, the acting was outstanding. I really felt the emotions. The lead Wendla, who was played by KyLeigh Zimmerer, was amazing. I have also seen bits and pieces of the Broadway version which starred Lea Michelle, and obviously if I were to compare the acting, the Broadway version would be victorious. However, for a college production, these actors have limited past experience, but their acting was professional. Also, when they sang the song "Those You've Known," I felt chills and had goose bumps because that was such an emotional song. You could feel all the emotions and guilt Melchior, played by Ryan Ramirez, was feeling because both his best friend, Moritz, played by Justin Noblitt, and the girl he impregnated, Wendla, died and he believed he was to blame. I could see how Harold Hill’s tactic changed from something along the lines of ‘to deceive’ to ‘to woo’ around the song “The sadder but wiser girl”. Marian Paroo’s tactic also changes from ‘to avoid’ to ‘to love’ around “My white Knight”. These actors also projected extremely well, as I could hear everything being said. They articulated well too, which I believe must be hard for them as every character had a southern accent. The actors easily incorporated their character’s goals into their acting and onstage
Their acting chops were very impressive whether it was comedic, emotional, or just stunning overall. Yet, on the other hand, some minor characters weren’t as well heard as others. I feel as the play could be better if some of the minor characters had projected their voice more, allowing their character to be known. However, although some voices were much stronger than others, all actors were full of talent, capable of dealing with script’s requirements, and did a good job
As far as acting, the performers were able to convey the feelings they needed to. However, some characters such as Ol' Cap'n played by Dick Lambert and Luttibelle played by April Curry, seemed more committed and engaging in their roles than others. A crucial factor in April Curry portraying her role so well was her vocal talent far exceeded that of any of the other major performers. She had an amazing voice that I was dazzled by from curtain up to down and left me craving for more. This almost compensated for my disappointment when it came to the ensemble singing to the soundtrack. Many performers were dependent on the cd and were not confident as to when to begin or stop singing, which dampered many moments of the performers. Another element of acting that I enjoyed was the exaggerated use of cooning throughout the duration of the performance that brought characters to life, and enabled certain moments to seem real.
Tori Gresham also had a wonder voice that was enjoyable to listen to throughout the performance. I thought that the sound was just perfect. I was clearly able to hear, and understand each character thought the entire performance. Each character sang very well, and performed every performance to its fullest potential. There was not one character that disappointed me.
The show was natural because all the cast understands their roles well. They have a great voice. All the songs sound great. Monica, Nathan, and Kimberly voices were just unbelievable. It makes the audience sink into the play more and more. The show flows well and the director has done a great job. She gives the actors/actresses to use their own way to portray the characters other than just telling them what do to. Something that can do better is the dancing. In the play, the dance was off because there are so many dancers it understandable that they don’t have the same pace. It would be great that they dance at the same pace. For example, during the ball, there is one couple who dance faster than the rest but at the end they still catch up with each other. It was nice when actors and crew move the set in the dark. Some crew wears black so they are see less visible. It is a great idea when the directors did that. Something that the play did well was the set, the dresses, the jokes, songs and many other
... mine”. Despite the connection I have with the song, I feel that the performance was below average overall because they really lacked stage presence and consistency. I understand that it is a slower song compared to the others in the main setlist, however, even if the pace of the song is slow, the performer must still maintain a balance between energy and chemistry with the audience which they failed to do so. Towards the end, Zayn’s falsetto during his ad-libs in the bridge section made up for the flat notes sung by the group earlier. He has always been the strongest soloist. I also admired the floating platform they used to float above the audience for this song because it changes our perception. I looked up to them physically just as I looked up to them emotionally. It was definitely a good experience. I truly cannot wait to attend another concert of theirs.
