Tough Guise :Violence, Media and the crisis in Masculinity released in 1999 by anti-sexism activist Jackson Katz is an hour long documentary depicting masculinity in the American culture from late 20th century to mid 20th centuries . It shows us how most men think about themselves and what attributes they should possess in order to be respected in the society. Their thoughts are mostly influenced by the powerful media which repetitively shows that men should be tough and masculine in nature.

In the documentary, the media repetitively shows that a real man should always be tough and powerful. It influences the minds of the young males by showing their favourite characters and heros to be masculine and powerful. It promotes violence by showing fighting scenes in movies and how the hero defeats the villain by using his power. One of the most popular superhero characters in the world is batman, his physical transformation over the years proves how the media portrays masculinity as the main attribute. There is a huge difference in the physicality of batman played by Adam West in the 1960s and the one played by Christian Bale in the recent Batman trilogy. This just confirms what the media shows to the younger generation which is that the strength and masculinity makes one a real man. In the documentary the media is also blamed for showing racism as Jackson Katz highlights that in movies the characters are given roles according to their race, as the African Americans are shown mostly to be gangsters or criminals and having poor and difficult lives. The Mexicans are shown to be wrestlers, drug lords or criminals in most movies. It also promotes gender inequality as women are shown to be weak and the male characters have to save them from evil.
