The purpose of this experiment was to test which brand of whitening toothpaste is the most effective. The original hypothesis was that Crest 3D White Advanced Toothpaste be the most effective, while Arm & Hammer Advanced Whitening Toothpaste will be the least successful in whitening the tiles. The hypothesis also stated that the Sensodyne and Colgate brands will be equally as effective, while being more sufficient than Arm & Hammer, but less than Crest. The hypothesis was partially supported as Arm & Hammer was the least effective and Crest was the most. However, Sensodyne was more sufficient than Colgate. This was clearly displayed on the graphs On the whitening effectiveness scale, the average score for Crest was 3.5/5, Sensodyne was 3/5, Colgate was 2/5 and Arm and Hammer was only 1.5/5. The results showed that Crest and Sensodyne were more effective than Colgate and Arm & Hammer. As shown on the graphs, the tiles become increasingly whiter after every brushing. The experiment consisted of manually brushing tiles for two minutes. However, brushing for exactly two minutes every time is unfeasible, even with the use of a timer. The time of washing after the tile was brushed was not a control and varied. Another potential disruption to the data could include the amount of force used on each tile. For each trial, Crest was brushed first which may potentially mean more force went into brushing that tile, causing it to be the whitest. An additional factor that may have affected the results is the amount of toothpaste. The amount of toothpaste used to brush each tile was most likely different every time which may have contributed to the results. More trials could have been useful for this project as five trials probably was not enough to ensure accurate
