Homework: School work that a student is required to do at home. If so required than how do students have time to do anything else? Homework should be banned because it is bad for mental and physical health, also kids have other important things going on, and lastly it is very stressful for the parents. First of all, homework is bad for mental health and physical health. In the article “How Much Homework Is Too Much” by Sarah Caspari Staff, states “That a study published in the American Journal of Family Therapy state's ‘early elementary students are have far more homework than they should be having. First and second grade children had three times the homework.” If kids are having too much homework then they won't have time to do anything else like sleeping and other thing because they stay up to late. In the article “Do Kids Need Homework states “ The National …show more content…
In the article “Should Kids Have Homework Over Break” “Steve Cochrane a superintendent of Princeton Public Schools states ‘breaks are time to play outside and and go to museums and concerts .” (Hans and Tanner) Kids should have more time and more experiences than just staying at home all day doing homework. Plus there are many learning experiences outside of school like sports and other things. Also the kids need to learn how to be active member in the community. In the article “How Much Homework is Too Much” states “that earlier this year, a Manhattan public school abolished homework entirely, blaming it for students ‘frustration and exhaustion’ and lack for other activities and family time.” they state. Many kids are getting frustrated when doing homework and don't get enough family time and not get enough time to be kid. You should let kids be kids and play games instead of being inside all day doing homework and should get to play outside with friends and do other fun things. Obviously, kids have other important things to do than
79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.
A article by Annie Murphy Paul called The ´´Trouble With Homework´´ talks about how homework is like a double shift for High School, Middle School, or College School students as their first shift is 7-9 hours in school per day. The trouble with homework is that students have other things to do after school like sports, hobbies, or a job that they have to attend to after school. Some students also want to just relax after school and have a good time with friends or family and homework is affecting them because they always worry about it and can't do things they want to because they have to finish it. One mother said ´´School for [my son] is work´´ as she is referring that when her son comes home he has to work another 1-5 on his homework and
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
There should not be homework for students. For starters, homework pushes families further apart from each other. Secondly, homework causes kids to actually do worse on schoolwork and tests. Lastly, homework causes kids to get stressed out and depressed because they have to go home and do homework instead of have there own free time. Those are a few reasons why students should not have homework.
Studies have shown that kids gain more knowledge with a break before they learn in class. Students are constantly stuck in class, sitting down all day. Without a break, students get restless and are never able to relax. Students should have breaks during the school day because they won't be sitting in a chair all day, it will allow them to clear their minds, and they will retain the information better.
Even though students need to learn how to manage their time more efficiently, including budgeting your time to complete an assessment, they should not be required to do homework. Homework is a big waste of time and isn't efficient. To begin with, homework is causing insane stress for students today. When you get 30 minutes of homework from each class, that is 3 hours of homework! That leaves you no time for family dinners, game night, hanging out with friends, going to youth group or church, or activities like art, music, soccer, and maybe even feeding the homeless.
Kids are missing out on fun activities because they are busy doing homework. Sometimes students stay up way too late because they are doing homework. Then the student doesn’t get a lot of sleep which can lead them to being late the next morning for school. Also while a student is doing homework everyone else is out playing fun games. The kid then might get jelous which can lead the student to depression. The student can’t do stuff like play football with friends or watch a movie with a family member. Students don’t get to explore the world around them because of homework. Kids should be out playing sports or playing
Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework
Many students do not enjoy their homework even if it is only studying. These students would not be able to have any free time because there's homework. There should not be homework because classwork is already enough work, it takes time away from other activities, and it does not let kids have independent thinking, so they won’t be able to be hard workers.
Students deserve their free time after that many hours of school and if the teachers give work then they also have to grade it so it makes everyone's life harder and less enjoyable. “Downtime replenishes the brain’s stores of attention and motivation, encourages productivity and creativity, and is essential to both achieve our highest levels of performance and simply form stable memories in everyday life.” Scientific American stated in an article, which provides evidence that after seven hours of work we could use some free time. The final reason students shouldn’t have homework is because they don’t get the opportunity to have as much physical activity as they should.
Students are at school for 6 hours a day and teachers still give us homework. When teachers give us homework they are taking away more of our free time. There have been times when I have been working on homework from 3:00 in the afternoon to midnight. Instead of spending my afternoon on so much homework, I could have been outside or spending time with my family. Homework keeps students from spending time with their families, causes unneeded stress on their lives and causes health problems.
Have you ever wondered what school would be like without homework? I think it would be much better. It is important that we should not have homework because most children don’t like homework in the first place and with the increasing reasons why homework is bad, we shouldn’t have it at all. While some may have an argument on how homework is good and , I politely disagree. Homework is not beneficial for children for many reasons. Homework is not beneficial because it is challenging to do at home and also because it’s bad for children's health and feelings, Homework is definitely not beneficial.
Homework is way to stressful for kids who already have enough to do at school, so why give them work to do at home that just adds on to the headache Known as work? Teachers give out homework because they think it is helping kids education. What they don’t know is that the work they are giving out just overwhelms students who don’t know how to do that work. It also means that some students could possibly be getting bad grades for things that they don’t understand. This is very important to my claim because if we have less homework none of these things will happen to students who don’t understand the topic. What can take more experienced students 5-10 minutes can take others longer time periods to complete the work given. giving students less homework you should receive better quality homework. That paragraph should
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
I remember being a kid and wanting to get off school go home and relax, only to find out at the end of the day that my teacher was assigning two hours’ worth of homework after being in school for eight! First of all I felt completely devastated, second I felt very upset. I always thought it was completely unfair to have homework, I mean when will you get to be a kid right? Now as a parent I absolutely despise it when my daughter comes home with homework from school. Sometimes I will have made plans to go and have some mother daughter bonding time only to have my child come home with a packet due the next day. Bedtime in my household is 8:30pm, school lets out at around 3:30 pm, one hour of driving in traffic to get home, homework takes around 2hours to finish, so that puts us at 6:30pm for dinner time which usually takes another hour and a half leaving
