The Tonkawa Tribe lived in Northeastern, Oklahoma in 1601. The Apache Tribe pushed the Tonkawa Tribe south to the Red River by 1700. Tonkawa had a penchant for cannibalism, which made them unpopular with other Native American groups and the new texans. The Tonkawa tribe used to speak the native tonkawa language but now they mostly just speak english. The men perform a scout dance before going on a raid, the dance would usually begin after dark.They also perform a scalp dance. The Tonkawa have many dances and ceremonies, with much detail. The most important animal sought by the Tonkawa was the bison. The Tonkawa had herds of horses, some were obtained through raids, some were used in battle and some were for use in battle. Women did most of the child care while and the cooking. Only men were allowed to become Tonkawa Chiefs. The children played games and played with dolls. Women would sometimes use cradleboards to carry their children, which is now used in a more advanced form today.
