The film Titanic is a critically acclaimed motion picture released in 1997 by the director James Cameron. At the time, it was considered to be one of the best films released to date. Although it was a huge success in cinemas globally, this does not mean that some of the material presented was the entire historical truth. The movie begins with treasure hunters searching the wreck of the Titanic for a rare diamond, called ‘The Heart of the Ocean’. They discover a portrait of a woman wearing the diamond necklace, who turns out to be Rose Dewitt Bukater. She was a passenger on the ship who survived. She tells the treasure hunters her tales of what it was like on board the ship, including a romance between her and a young man named Jack Dawson. She also tells her account of the shipwreck and the moments afterward. Some things presented in the film actually were true. This makes the film’s story even more dramatic and emotive, but there is little to no historical information to confirm this. There were gates in place on the ship to keep ‘third class’ passengers away from other passengers, but this was to ensure that the immigrants would not pass any infectious diseases to the other passengers, and was actually part of the United States’ immigration laws. The immigrants could be taken for health checks upon arrival, while the other passengers could skip this, saving time and money. Unfortunately, there were no lifeboats stored in the third class sections of the ship. The passengers were technically not held back, but it was much more difficult for them to make their way to the lifeboats, as they had to find their way though a myriad of hallways and staircases just to get to the upper decks
