History/Background to Problem: What is a tire/tyre? A tire is a ring-shaped covering which is made from synthetic rubber, natural rubber, fabric, wire, black carbon and chemical compounds that is used to fit around a wheel’s rim. Tires are used in most automobiles, motorcycles, airplanes and bicycles.
Most citizens of Trinidad and Tobago use some means of transportation that used tires. In the morning you will see them waiting for maxis or taxis or stuck in traffic for many hours along our nation’s highways and main roads which proves that tires are very important to the consumer.
New tires are extremely expensive where prices range from eight hundred dollars to fifteen hundred dollars. The average consumer can’t afford this as a result they resort to purchasing of used tires.
Many drivers who need better tread on a car or truck might be looking for sustainability of going with used tires. Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages of buying used tires. Advantages of procuring used tires include best pricing .used tires come with much lower prices than a new set, even if the used set is in great condition. This leaves the driver free to pursue paying for extras like alignment and balancing that will make tires last even long on the road. Buying used tires well is part of a greater plan for some drivers. economically and cautious drivers will often get good at inspecting used tires to make sure they get great deals that won’t compromise their safety on the road. Buying used also helps cut down on waste; if everybody simply bought new, there would be an accumulation of perfectly good tires lying around. ("ADVANTAGES & Disadvantages of Used Tires," 2012)

Smaller crumbs can be fused together to make walking or running mats or soft surfaces for playgrounds. Drainage around building foundations, erosion control for rainwater runoff areas, crash barriers at sides of race tracks are other uses of scrap tires without much modification. In Trinidad and Tobago used tires are used as decoration, made into swings and used to protect plants or trees.

Scope of Problem: Currently this research is based on the east – west corridor but this problem affects Trinidad and Tobago as a whole.

Significance of Study: The information collected on the topic will be presented to management of tire shop owners to create a policy to address the problem and can be submitted the Bureau of Standards which can aid them in making legislation to be submitted to Parliament
