Three Ways to Persuade by John Edlund: To persuade someone is like to change their mind or to convince the audience. It is similar to convince but it does not mean exactly the same. “Persuasion, to a large extent, involves convincing people to accept our assumptions as probably true” (Edlund 2.) We should not change the way we treat fish simply because they do not have a conscience does not really change anything. We should continue treating fish as how we always have because just because fish don’t feel anything doesn’t really give us a right to begin to mistreat fish all of the sudden. A bird actually feels pain unlike fish who don’t really show that they are in pain. There have be experiments testing how fish would feel if they were to be put in pain by inserting vinegar, since vinegar causes a lot of pain to people. The results were not surprising because it didn’t really show that it was harmed.
I believe fish do not feel pain simply because they are not as intelligent. “ None of these tells us that fish are conscience, but it does demonstrate them to be cognitively competent: They are more than simple automata” (Braithwaite 2.) This shows proves that fish are not as intelligent in order to really show that they feel pain. However this does not justify us to treat fish differently because we know they aren’t as intelligent.
Fish should not be treated any different than the way they are treated now. Now we know that fish are not intelligent but it doesn’t justify us to treat them any different than how we did before
