Personhood is the quality of being an individual person. Personhood has importance in a philosophical manner as it is a controversial topic involving equality under the law and receiving specific rights. Dr. T White is a philosopher who has researched the concepts of what personhood entails as he comes up with eight criteria which give the status of a person. His criteria include that a person is aware, feels positive and negative sensations, has emotions, and has a sense of self. Although Dolphins fulfill Dr. T White’s criteria, they should not be considered a “person” under the law as many other animals fit the criteria too. The first criteria dolphins meet is being aware. T White’s second criterion in relation to a dolphin’s behavior is the feeling of positive and negative sensations. Dolphins like most non-persons also feel pain when getting hurt from various injuries, and pleasure from their frequent sexual behavior. This clearly shows how dolphins should be awarded respect and understanding for their sensations. But after all, it does not mean they are “persons” under the law because dolphins and many other animals live in a natural habitat, survive in nature, and overcome obstacles. Simply experiencing negative sensations does not mean you are awarded rights and freedoms. The ability to be aware that one is having experiences such as physical pleasure, and pain and to be able to reflect on those experiences is an important criterion for personhood. Dolphins have a signature whistle that each dolphin receives as an equivalent of a name which they use for interactions and communication within themselves. Although dolphins use sound to communicate, scientists still know little about the process and the content of communicating which indicates that it is not for sure that they understand the concept of self.
