I know there are many smokers of students in this college. If Edmonds Community College really becomes a smoke-free campus, I guess it may have many against voices from students. The college should prepare itself for feedbacks. However, as everyone knows, school is a place where educates people. So it is supposed to be a clean air campus. Becoming a smoke-free campus is one of the improvements. In the smoke-free campus, although people are not allowed to smoke on campus, they still have rights to carry tobacco product, so they can go to other place to smoke or they can smoke electronic tobacco which has less harm to people.
Smoking is not a good thing. School is a place to educate people, so it should try its best to avoid bad things. In my opinions, school can even be described as a perfect place on itself. It should teach students that smoke is not good. I think what school should do is not only tell students that smoke is bad but also needs to become a smoke-free campus. I know there are many disadvantages on smoking. School must know it, so it should help students to avoid it. I think the school teaches students smoke is bad but on the other hand, it provides smoking areas on campus. They conflict. Now, school is trying to do the exact thing. Not only tell students smoke is bad but also trying to implement the policy. If be a smoke-free campus, the college will remove the smoking areas and I think they will build other things instead of them. It must cost money and the problem is what kinds of buildings will instead of them. Because each of those areas is small space, so I don't think each of them is enough to build up a building. By saying smokers have the “right to die,” but non-smokers have the right to “not die” puts non-smokers in the dangers of smoking as well. This says that non-smokers can also be harmed by smoke and can cause death either way. A letter to Jeremiah O’Leary said, “Smoke yourself to death, but please not me.” By the writer adding this in her article, she inserts brutality from the non-smokers. It makes the readers believe that non-smokers will use violence and harsh words to stop smokers from smoking.
The smoking issue is very complicated and some of the arguments are beyond the scope of this essay. Still, we can obtain a balanced outlook if we consider the following: the facts of smoking, individual right, societal responsibility, and the stigma of smoking. Haviland and King write essays which contain very important points, but seem to contain a bias which may alienate some people. To truly reach a consensus on the smoking issue, we must be willing to meet each other halfway. We must strike equilibrium between individual right and societal responsibility.
Improving smoking boxes on campus can improve overall environment on campus. Every day in our daily campus lives, we can easily see people smoking outdoors. Smokers would just go anywhere they want to smoke even when it says it is forbidden to smoke or there are no trash cans. Smokers argue that it is their rights to smoke wherever they want but for non-smokers smoking outdoors can be a source of stress. Not few non-smokers hate the smell of smoke. Some even complain that cigarette smoke give them headache. This is my second premise. Here, there is an implied notion that the Los Angels Times conducted a study to find these findings true. The third premise states, Tobacco industry allies recycle old myths and propaganda - and continue to plant the seeds of confusion and doubt as to the economic effects of smoke free air policies - before legislatures and city councils. Here we see the strong initiative that the tobacco companies especially Philips and Morris take to attack policies that go against their business. The next premise is the fourth premise, As in the past, tobacco companies have continued to create and hide behind front groups to lobby against tobacco control and public health policies. This is another implied notion, which we can say that tobacco companies are trying to control the regulations on tobacco.

Today, through out the country, and even right here in Ames, Iowa, there is an enormous problem of cigarette smoke putting people?s lives in danger. By passing a ban to make smoking illegal in public places, the lives of people who have been made to suffer from second-hand smoke will be improved, and people who currently smoke will be discouraged from continuing to do so. This will help to improve the lives of all Ames citizens.
Should IPU totally ban alcohol on campus? Some student finds it is hard to answer that question, and most of male student would answer “it does depend on the situation and the mood bro.”. It is not a secret that alcoholic drinks could make a person feel better and more relax especially for a man, if he experiencing depression or stress males often hangout with their friend to overcome their struggle, even I used to drink alcohol sometimes whenever I had problems with my school life, relationship or if I fell under pressure. Even though alcoholic drinks can have some temporary stress relieving benefit, alcohol has plenty of bad side effects for individual and their social environment. Most Universities ban alcoholic drinking on their campuses, but some campus still allow student to drink alcohol in designated areas or for certain events, like our beloved IPU campus for example. Beside the fact that IPU already provide events (e.g. Ball party) that allow student to drink certain amount of alcohol, it is still common for students to break the rules by drink alcohols in the dormitories. Therefore this essay will cover the pro’s and con’s that will be discussed about this topic.
Many restaurant and bar owners think that the ban will decrease business, but a counter-argument to this is that only twenty percent of the city's population are smokers, and when the smoking ban is in place, the other eighty percent will go out to bars and restaurants, dramatically increasing business. There are many different opposing arguments to banning smoking, and the debate will probably never end. Smoking should be banned in public places because, although some may argue that it infringes on their freedom, smoking is replete with harmful substances. The health situation could be drastically improved if one of the risk factors - tobacco - was eliminated. People have a right to protect themselves from smoke inhalation. People shouldn’t have to inhale the ill-effects of other people’s smoking. The creation of smoke-free public places also improves air quality.
Consequently, tobacco which contains many harmful chemicals damages human beings’ health day by day. Although people are aware of the bad effects of smoking, they still smoke for one reason or another. When the current situation is considered, it is clear that smoking which has been spreading all over the world is not only the problem of a country or a territory but the problem of mankind because smoking brings many disadvantages for humans like diseases. I personally believe that it is important to help children remain lifelong non-smokers because they are our hope for a non-smoking future.
