<Smoking Boxes>
Improving smoking boxes on campus can improve overall environment on campus. Every day in our daily campus lives, we can easily see people smoking outdoors. Smokers would just go anywhere they want to smoke even when it says it is forbidden to smoke or there are no trash cans. Smokers argue that it is their rights to smoke wherever they want but for non-smokers smoking outdoors can be a source of stress. Not few non-smokers hate the smell of smoke. Some even complain that cigarette smoke give them headache. Our university built two smoking boxes on campus for smokers but they do not use them, arguing that they smell bad and that they are not well maintained. If we were to improve the current status of smoking

The kinds of pollution caused by smoking outdoors include, air pollution, land pollution, water pollution and ecosystem pollution. The effect of smoking on air pollution is quite clear. The harmful chemicals produced from smoke floats around the air causing pollution. Pollution caused by cigarette litter is land pollution, water pollution and ecosystem pollution. Before talking about the details of how cigarette litter causes various pollutions, it is important to understand that it takes more than 10 years for cigarette butts to naturally disappear. When people throwaway the ashes and cigarette butts on the ground, they can start bush fire. Also, harmful chemicals still remain in the cigarette butts that the chemicals are absorbed into the land polluting soil and trees. These carelessly thrown away butts sometimes travel with water such as rain and end up in places such as sewerage or rivers. This contaminates the water people will later use. Polluting water also leads to pollution of ecosystem. As the water is influenced by the harmful chemicals, fish and plants living underwater are affected by the chemicals. Also, there may be incidents of fish eating cigarette butts. This is also possible for animals living on land. Some animals mistaken butts as food and eat them, which is very bad for their health. There are squirrels, cats and dogs on our campus. Imagine these animals eating butts as food and getting sick. Smoking boxes can provide smokers with a designated place to throw away ashes and cigarette butts and eventually decrease chances of pollution on
As a result of this fact, cigarette and other smoking equipment start around 2,500 fires a year in Australia. A study conducted by the NSW Fire and Rescue service found that on a 27-degree day, 4% of the trails where a lit cigarette was thrown into grass on the side of the road caught fire and needed fire fighters to extinguish the flames before they burned out of control. This study also found that cigarettes ignited hay in 33% of the cases after performing laboratory trails. After the results of this study had been published, Station officer Scott from FRNSW stated that there is definite potential for fires caused by dropped cigarette butts especially in bushfire season. He also stated that, “a careless act by one person may have dire consequences for other, including the fire fighters who risk their lives at fires.” This is a major reason why I strongly believe that smoking should be banned, as it can help contribute to cutting down the numbers of fires that Australia experienced. Furthermore, cigarette butts and toxins can prove a major havoc on Australia’s marine life. According to Clean up Australia, a site dedicated to conserving our environment, 95% of the litter found on beaches come from suburban streets through the stormwater system. As stated before, 7 billion cigarettes
But the environmental impact of tobacco goes far beyond litter. Cigarette butts leach toxic chemicals —including arsenic, cadmium, lead and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons—that could pollute the environment and harm its ecosystems. They are mostly made of plastic and are only biodegradable under ideal conditions, making them a long-lasting threat to the
Cigarette is mainly made out of tobacco. Tobacco contains a massive amount of harmful substances such as carbon monoxide, acrolein, nicotine and much more. When people smoke, the chemicals enter their body. Also, the tobacco smoke releases so other people could receive chemicals if close the to the smoker. These harmful chemicals can cause many types of illnesses and diseases, and some of the diseases could often lead to death. Also, cigarette smoking is very addictive because the tobacco contains nicotine which makes the user addicted to smoking. Cigarette smoking is a currently worldwide problem and should be reduced everywhere because it is the number one killer in the world.
Someone you might know, whether your grandparents, parents, siblings, friends, or even yourself, smokes or has smoked cigarettes. If you haven’t yourself, you’ve seen the effects and consequences one can encounter. Not always, but sometimes, you see the struggles and sickness your loved one can go through and you’d give anything to make that someone feel better. Technology has been on a rise and possibly figured out a safer way. Smoking an electronic cigarette or perhaps a traditional cigarette still provides the nicotine, but it’s possible one can change not just someone’s health for the better but others around them.
Did you know that in 2011 there were more than 6 million tobacco caused deaths worldwide (Henningfield)? Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. Because there is nicotine in cigarettes, they are highly addictive. Cigarettes are one of the worlds most devastating causes of death and disease (Henningfield). There are many negative effects from secondhand smoking, both immediately and over time. Smoking also affects the environment indoors negatively. Also, when pregnant woman or parents of young children smoke, they could harm their children. People should not smoke with others around because they are exposed to harmful chemicals and they are not the one putting themselves in danger.
People throughout the time have been worried about some acts that people make; these acts are sometimes performed unconsciously or without realizing these are affecting they negatively affect others. Some reasons why this happens, they do not realize they are making someone uncomfortable, or they simply do not care about it. Smoking is one of these activities. For a long time, smoking in public places has been extremely popular regardless of age or gender. Many smokers believe they are free to smoke wherever and whenever they. Even if they realize the damage they are causing to themselves, which is a personal decision, when they smoke in public places they ignore the collective damage they are causing others. It has been claimed that despite not engaging in the activity themselves, “passive smokers suffer the same horrifying bad consequences as active smokers” in the form of second-hand smoke (Ecobichon & Wu, 1990, p. 43). Smoking is thus a dangerous activity that is becoming more and more popular in campus every day and is becoming a social and educational problem. Schools should ban smoking from their campus, and those that have should implement stricter methods of enforcing such rules.
I can still hear my dad’s words in my head, “if only I had quit sooner.” My dad decided to quit smoking cigarettes about eight years ago. He was fed up with letting his addiction to smoking since the age of fourteen, rule his life. Smoking had taken its toll on his health and it was an unnecessary financial burden on him and our family. My dad knew how bad smoking was for his health. He also knew how harmful secondhand smoke is, and thankfully, he chose not to smoke around his family.
Smoking has been reduced over the past two decades, but “cigarette smoking among college students is of concern because the smoking prevalence among college students did not decrease as it did among the general population,” (Harrar et al. 121). This statement shows the significance of efforts to reduce smoking among college students. I believe college campuses would benefit from a “no-smoking policy”. This policy would serve to eliminate the harmful effects of smoking and second-hand smoke on campuses. If students and faculty are not permitted to smoke on campus, they will have to travel off campus to smoke. Therefore, if smoking on campus property is prohibited, smokers will be inconvenienced, so many students may quit or at least cut back on smoking.
Many actions have been taken on vaping and cigarettes, such as only allowing people over or at the age of eighteen to buy the product and putting warning labels on products. The serious issue is there needs to be action applied to the fact that these products can kill a human being. There is a wide variety of policies trying to be passed for vaping and cigarettes. A vaping regulation is trying to pass making all vape companies to carry products similar to products back when vaping firs started. This could cause the vaping market crash, making people lose money, and most important jobs. Some actions should be taken on tobacco products because of the risk of getting cancer in it is high.
... “Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It causes serious illness among an estimated 8.6 million persons, it costs $167 billion in annual health-related losses, and it kills approximately 438 000 people each year. (n1, n2) Worldwide, smoking kills nearly 5 million people annually. If current trends continue, this number will double by 2030, and smoking will kill more than 1 billion people during this century” (Frieden and DE). Therefore, banning smoking in public places can reduce at least some of these problems and would enable people to live in a healthier way.
For example, smoking is strictly prohibited for teens, students and other younger generations. The younger population of smokers is constantly growing. This on the other hand has impacted the environment in a negative manner. Smoking on campus in schools is still a problem and imposes a health risk for students and negative environmental impacts. It is very important to protect students, faculty and staff from second hand smoke on college campuses. Many colleges and universities have become smoke free campuses. A person who smokes on the campus exposes the other nonsmokers to second hand smoke, something which can have negative effects to both their health. The worst part is that the people who do not smoke are also affected from the second hand smoke; and the effect is almost the same as being the
American Lung Association). Also, when burned, cigarette smoke creates chemicals that affect our planet. “At least 50 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous” (What's in a Cigarette? American Lung Association). The American Lung Association goes on and lists a few of the chemicals and gives a brief example of what they are used for.
As for the smokers, their health is at a high risk. Smoking causes cancers to the voice box, esophagus, lungs, throat and mouth. Also it helps in developing cancers in the kidneys, bladder, pancreas and cervix of the body. Smoking can cause cardiovascular disease such as heart disease, diseases of the blood vessels and stroke. According to CNN “The landmark U.S. Surgeon General 's report linked smoking with bad health.” In this study, lung cancer was the first cancer to be linked to smoking in between the 1940s – 1950s. It is also the number one cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Between 80 to 90 percent of all lung cancer today is smoking related and there are eight other cancers linked to smoking. According to the CDC, “Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. Smoking causes more deaths each year than all of these combined, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm-related incidents.” If smoking cause 480,000 deaths each year in the United States then people should stop smoking. People are still smoking today. Therefore, they don’t care for their health. Smoking can also cause respiratory diseases. About 8,000 people die each year from respiratory diseases from inhaling smoke from cigarettes which can permanently damage their lungs and airways. This is way people
Cigarettes are one of the most common killers known to mankind. Cigarettes kill about 6 million people every year, and that number isn’t going to go down in less we do something about it. Smoking in the twentieth century killed only 100 million people, whereas a billion could die in our century. There are several more reasons why we should ban cigarettes, and I am going list them.
One of the biggest problems that people are faced with on a day-to-day basis is cigarette smoke. The sole cause for 480,000 deaths each year just in the United States is accredit to cigarettes(CDC). For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable. Some smoke to appeal to their peers or simply because it “feels good.” Smoking one cigarette can lead to a major addiction. The effects of smoking hurt oneself and those amongst us. Smoking Kills as the ad portrays this revolver and cigarettes as the bullets, and also lists the side effects of smoking. Cigarettes causes cancer, increases the risk of you getting a stroke, highly addictive and causes a lot of health problems. Nearly 16
