First, in “Things Fall Apart” Chinua Achebe discusses the transformation of a society as Europeans begin to move in. Characters are faced with embracing the change or sticking with traditions. For instance, leader Okonkwo does not fully embrace the change of colonization as his social status can be affected. However, other characters support pre-colonization. Okonkwo son Nwoye, was excited about the transformation and ultimately joins the European missionaries. Different areas of the novel relate to concepts discussed in the lecture this week. First, the lecture discussed the Geography and Environment of the land in Africa made it appealing to the Europeans. At the beginning of the novel, Okonkwo mentions during planting time he works diligently. This signals that Umuofia depends on the agriculture of the land for survival. The lecture mentioned that conflict was not about territory in pre-colonial Africa, conflict rose about plunder. Okonkwo believes that the Europeans should be forced to leave Umuofia, but others disagree with the leader because of the goods they have provided. When Okonkwo exile is over he returns to Umuofia where things have been transformed by the Europeans. The Europeans have built a prison; they have established a government court of law, where people are tried for breaking laws. In this instance, Okonkwo was unhappy with this decision as it altered the traditional values he knew. Next, a surplus is a concept that was discussed in the lecture. A surplus is important for the development of the state. These developments came from profits forms trade goods. The Europeans begin to support the economy and gain wealth for the villages.
