Obedience and disobedience were implicated themes in Renaissance Era poetry, whether the acts of such were toward man in John Donne’s work or toward God in John Milton’s. The concepts of obedience and disobedience can only make sense with a structural ranking or scale of entities. “The Great Chain of Being” is fundamental in the epic poem of Paradise Lost, as well as other poetry of the period. The beings and objects that held the most value were signified at the top of the chain, while the least valued were depicted at the bottom. God and the angels beneath him are positioned at the top end of the chain, existing entirely as spirit forms. Humans, capable of making mistakes and always changing are liable to change position. The worst part is that he does this knowingly that he is positioning Eve above God. God says in Book 3 lines 98-99 “I made him just and right, sufficient to have stood though free to fall.” This makes it clear that fate was not a factor when it came to Adam’s fall. Adam always had the choice to be obedient or not obedient toward God. Adam’s desire for Eve to remain in Paradise was the causation for him putting her on a pedestal above God, disrupting the order and clarity of who his real superior was. Also, interesting to note, in Book 6 lines 864 and 865 it is said that “headlong themselves they threw down from the verge of Heaven…” which suggests that Satan and his group did not fall because they were thrown from Heaven by God, but rather their choices were what caused them to throw themselves out. This again utters the idea that fate is not a reality; that everyone under God has free will to make the choice to listen to him, or be
It seems as though God’s intentions are to give mankind free will to decide upon compliance. If man so chooses to be compliant, then this will cause Earth and Heaven to conjoin as one, just as it is said in lines 160-161 of Book 7 “And earth be changed to Heaven, and Heaven to earth, one kingdom, joy and union without end.” Upholding the structure in which God is the answer for every action will lead to ultimate salvation and reward. Contrastingly, Satan does everything in his power to achieve the opposite; to turn the Chain of Being upside and point all roads to him. His continual sinning is met with degradation and destruction. When God created the animals in Paradise they were all obedient, including the snake. After Satan’s infection, the snake becomes bad. Also, Satan and all of his followers are turned into serpents by God as punishment for what they’ve
