In the novel The Tortilla Curtain there is a lot of themes, some of the themes are Racism and The American Dream. Racism is an important theme because of how T.C Boyle portrays racism towards Mexicans and immigrants by such acts like building the wall around Arroyo Blanco and when Jack Jardine Jr. seeks and destroys the Ricóns camp and then proceeding to vandalizing people’s property and then framing the Mexicans. The American Dream is a huge theme not just for the immigrants, although that is where it is the most powerful because the immigrants share the same dream as the American do and that is to be able live comfortably, have a steady job and not to wonder on a daily basis if they will be able to afford food. I believe the novel The Tortilla Curtain was written by T.C Boyle to remind us that think about how the situation would be different if we lived in a different life style and how we should be thankful for what we have. América’s view of the US changes drastically as the story progress. In the beginning of the story she is full of enthusiasm about coming to America with her husband Candido; due to the fact he promised they would have a better life. As the story progresses reality hits and she realizes that the American Dream isn’t easy to achieve. América realizes this by how she finds herself settling in a canyon with no clean water, not enough money and then having to work a lot after Candido is in the accident and then proceeding to steal from a garden just to have vegetables for her family. America’s feelings toward Candido during the novel are mixed feelings, she loves him yet at the same time she hates him. The reason why she is having mixed feelings for Candido is because she blames him for all the unforsaken ... ... middle of paper ... ...on the other hand the other family doesn’t really struggle for as much and doesn’t know the humiliation that comes from digging through the trash since they can afford to eat whatever they chose on a daily basis, whether they be vegetarians or not. In the novel, the women look at their individual housing situations as a giant disappointment. To explain, even though Kyra and Delaney housing situation brings both families closer together and they each have their own separate house, there is still that need to have an even bigger and a much better living condition for their families. Although, Kyra and Delaney both agree with their significant others dissatisfaction with the current situation that they find themselves in. I also believe that yet again the significant of this goes back to the American Dream and how we as Americans strive to make better in our life.
