In Sophocles play “Oedipus the King,” a young King learns his lesson that life teaches in general about fate, and irony of life itself. The theme of this play, is fate and free will, and the realization of how one can never change their own fate. In the beginning, Oedipus the King, is told by his brother-in-law Creon, that the oracle has spoken. Creon presents Oedipus with the message from the oracles, saying that the plague will end when the murderer of Laius, former king of Thebes, is caught and expelled; the murderer is within the city. By analyzing the tragic flaw, tragic fall, and tragic realization of the play, the reader will be able to better understand what lessons lie within Sophocles writing.
First, by analyzing the tragic flaw,
It is a reality point for the main character. Oedipus in the beginning of the play, has great power, wealth, and family. In the end however, Oedipus loses his crown, his respect, his daughters, and his eye sight. For example, Oedipus says, “But I’m now hated by the gods” (Sophocles 1776). In this play, the gods are everything to man, to be hated by the gods is to be hated by everyone. When Oedipus says this, he has realized where he stands in the eyes of the gods. This is one of Oedipus’s tragic fall’s during the play. In the very end of the play, Oedipus say’s “Do not take them from me” (Sophocles 1776). The King now has a major tragic flaw, when realizing he is losing his children as well. Oedipus tragic fall comes crashing down on him very hard, when losing his crown, family, and respect from the Gods.

The theme of “Oedipus the King” is the realization that one’s fate can never be changed nor rearranged. Tragic flaw must be in a play, so that it has a meaning and lesson for all audiences. Tragic fall happens in result from a tragic flaw that follows the main character in a play. Tragic realization can only occur if there is a tragic flaw and tragic fall in a play. These three elements all are so important to a play, without them, there would be no lesson or meaning in a play.
