The Y2K Problem
The Y2K problem...the Y2K glitch...the millennium bug. Whatever you call it, it is the inability of some computers and computerized systems to correctly recognize dates after December 31, 1999. Many products have microchips that have been programmed to process only the last two digits of a year on the assumption that the first two would be one and nine. As a result, 98 is read as 1998, and 00 could be read as 1900 instead of 2000.
Y 2 Care About Y2K: Checklist
How do you know if you will encounter Y2K problem? I have prepared the following checklist to help you avoid being bitten by the millennium bug.
If you have a personal computer, PC software, fax machine, camcorder, camera, digital wristwatch, monitored security system or Global Positioning System unit, check the manufacturer’s web site or contact the manufacturer to see whether your product has the potential for a Y2K problem.
Make a list of your other household products with a calendar function. Check the manufacturer’s web site or contact the manufacturer by telephone or mail to find out compliance status.
If you have a bank, mutual fund or brokerage account, start to keep records of any transactions that you make at least 3 months before and after January 1, 2000. If you use your computer to make any of these transactions, download the records of your transactions, and keep them on a backup diskette. Print copies for your files.
If you have a mortgage, car loan or other debts, keep your canceled checks as proof of the payments you have made. Ask your mortgage or car lender for a statement of payments already made and those to come with the amounts allocated to interest, princip...

...re good starting places for individual planning efforts. Obtaining paper copies of important records; writing to service and utility providers requesting information on their compliance and contingency plans; making sure to have some cash on hand, extra prescription drugs, and a full fuel tank in the car -- these are some cheap, easy, very basic precautions everyone should take.
Raising Awareness Write letters of enquiry to government representatives and agencies, service and utility providers, all the businesses and organizations you rely on to maintain your lifestyle. Do not forget to ask questions of your employer! Several of the URLs listed below include sample letter templates that you can use. Talk to your family and friends; they might think you are crazy, or they might invite you to visit their rural farm over Christmas and New Year's of 1999-2000!
Keep a six year log retention – After you’re finished using a server, hard drives should not be used again, until they have had several passes of clean swipes. This is to be sure that PHI cannot be read again. Inquire as to what kind of process they use to wipe the hard drives clean and how many passes they make.
In making the decisions to protect people’s lives from hazards and disasters, evacuations sometimes become necessary. Of course early in the reaction to the incident, or the response phase, this may become a decision for local and state emergency managers. The San Diego, California wildfire which occurred in October 2007 caused a large scale evacuation. This essay is an analysis, and identification of lessons learned from the evacuation incident. As well a plan of personal recommendations and improvements will be made based on information covered in the National Housing strategy, and Robert Stafford Act.
The goal of 2011 of the National Preparedness Goal, and a month later by the National Preparedness System (NPS). ‘Prepare’, or ‘preparedness’ is a key term here, as is ‘risk’. In order to properly examine the National Preparedness System these terms… (2011 National Preparedness Goal). The National Preparedness Goal can only work in risk management planning with prudency coupled with dispensation of resources at the local levels. Depending on the budgetary issues the financial appropriation might not be enough to sustain a carefully planned risk management. The forefront for the local authorities to mitigate against risk is funding. Of the pro at the community level are the loyalties of its employees of the local government and local community, and on hand resources that amplifies its footprint with the community in making sure that there is an uninterrupted continuation of life. The local government can device a well thought out plan to activate most of its resources when the alarms are sounded of a pending
Both man-made and natural disasters are often devastating, resource draining and disruptive. Having a basic plan ready for these types of disaster events is key to the success of executing and implementing, as well as assessing the aftermath. There are many different ways to create an emergency operations plan (EOP) to encompass a natural and/or man-made disaster, including following the six stage planning process, collection of information, and identification of threats and hazards. The most important aspect of the US emergency management system in preparing for, mitigating, and responding to man-made and natural disasters is the creation, implementation and assessment of a community’s EOP.

Some people wonder what Y2K is, and whether it is true or false. Should we be worried about Y2K? Some people are sure it is false, yet the news stresses that it is true. This has many people in fear for their life.
...e cut back to the department caused an operations halt and lead to a 19 percent drop in profit and an 8 percent drop in stock. Gross stated, “Despite a recommended implementation time of 48 months, Hershey’s demanded a 30-month turnaround so that it could roll out the systems before Y2K. (Gross)” Since the schedule was so tight, Hershey’s team had to take dastardly shortcuts at critical times of the implementation (Gross). The system went live and because of the poor implementation orders was prevented (Gross). Gross state this cost Hershey $100 million worth of orders when the supplies was in stock. Gross goes over how Hershey failed to do testing at certain phases, due to their desire to implement the system fast. Hershey also tried to implement the season during its busiest time, resulting in more loses from their cutbacks and poor handling of the implementation.
Many believe the most logical date for this data crash is January 1st, 2000. Many know about it and the possible 'infections'; the Year 2000 bug could cause to our every day life. Little is being done to solve this problem, considering it's monstrosity. One might believe that in the year 2000 havoc will be spread and a depression will occur because of this glitch. Another theory is that we will eventually run out of places to store data. Another date for an eventual breakdown would be February 29th, 2000 because most century years are not leap years.
As we approach the end of this century, many people have raised concerns regarding the serious issues surrounding the Y2K problems. Although no one knows precisely what will happen on January 1, 2000, the general opinion is that Y2K related problems will cause failures of basic services including utilities, water and phone service. Contrary to popular opinion, I believe that the Y2K problems will have more of a positive effect on our society because it has caused us to analyze more carefully, the data and the technology we rely on in everyday situations. In addition, the new millennium will usher an era of tremendous opportunities for technological advancements in our society. In other words, the current preparations to avert a Y2K crisis, has given us an advantage which will minimize technological breakdowns in the future and create new technology which will ensure a relatively smooth transition into the new millennium.
When Windows XP came out in October 21, many people happily to get the newest operating system. The pro about the operating system; finally it has improved theme by it look and graphic because of the desktop navigation (looks different from it earlier operating system, Windows 200), it will detect any hardware as it will automatically search to find the driver from the internet (such as printer, flash drives, etc.) so the hardware will be able to use. The networks in Windows XP were easier because of the installation wizard to complete the use for the networking. There are some other things that I’d like to work in Windows XP, but sometimes the updates changes things and improve things in Windows XP, including updates for getting rid of viruses. The cons of Windows XP was also become more vulnerable and getting hit mostly by viruses and malware attacks (due getting updates, sometimes the update was annoying because they were forced to be downloaded and install, including have the computer to restart to finish the process). There was a few thing that was taking out of Windows XP when it was upgraded from 2000 too, such as having background changes disabled in documents (I miss those, they were cool). The infamous “Send” and “Don’t send” error report was popping up too often. Some software do have incompatibility when they was built to use for older operating system, sometimes you might have to look for the update when the automatic update can’t find them.

the problem could cost businesses a total of $600 billion to remedy." (p. 1)The fallacy that mainframes were the only machines to be affected was short lived as industry realized that 60 to 80 million home and small business users doing math or accounting etc. on Windows 3.1 or older software, are just as susceptible to this "bug." Can this be repaired in time? For some, it is already too late.
There are many people involved in the frenzy surrounding Y2K. We have a Y2K coalition right here in Arkansas. The citizens of Harrison have formed a group called Y2K watch. Around one hundred people meet bimonthly to discuss strategies for getting through the millennium. They have even attracted outsiders. Jerry and Carolyn Head moved from a Dallas suburb to Harrison to escape the millennia madness. They have stocked up buying a generator, livestock, and hundreds of toilet paper rolls. They claim to just be “planners” and not part of the Y2K worriers in which "most of them are nuts".
