Fight Without Mercy - The Women Of ‘Krypton’
In just under three weeks, we will be graced with the series premiere of Krypton, a precursor television series to the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) film, Man of Steel. The series tells the story of Seg-El, the grandfather of Superman and how he must save his family legacy. Women are always known to play a role within Superman lore, no matter if they’re civilian or some kind of alien warrior.
However, this article isn’t discussing the males of the show. It will be discussing the women of the series, beginning with the female lead, Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell).
Lyta-Zod

Her father, Daron is the man who sentenced Val-El to death via The Phantom Zone. Her world collides with Seg’s when he saves her father and other members of Law Council from a would-be assassination attempt. After Seg is branded a hero, Nyssa is matched to Seg by her father as a reward for him saving lives.
Unbeknownst to Nyssa or anyone else, this revelation begins to cause strain on Seg’s forbidden relationship with Lyta-Zod. Over the cause of the story, Nyssa learns the value of friendship through Seg.
Jayna-Zod
The mother of Lyta, Jayna (Ann Ogbomo) is loyal to her family code of fighting without showing mercy. She attempts to teach her daughter this value as well, but it seems the younger Zod’s heart just isn’t in it. Jayna is fierecely loyal and it would appear that like her great-grandson, Dru-Zod would be 200 years in the future, Jayna wants ultimate control to some degree.
She is likely unaware of her daughter’s secret relationship with Seg, but may be aware that they have a close connection.
Charys-El
The mother of the protagonist of Krpyton, Seg-El, Charys-El (Paula Malcolmson) is also the wife of Ter-El and the daughter-in-law of
Remember the Titans is a movie about a high school football team that is diligently trying to win a state championship. The main obstacle that is in the way of them working together and getting the state championship is the fact that their team has both black and white male players. Today, it would be common for us to play with interracial people but in the year nineteen seventy-one it was not common at all. It was decided that Coach Boone (an African American), would be the head coach for the new football team at T.C. Williams High School. Coach Boone asks Coach Yoast, the former coach, to stay and be his assistant coach. He agrees and the white players also join the team along with the blacks. The team goes to Gettysburg College for camp where none of the teammates are comfortable with each other. Eventually, the team finally gets along at the camp and color is no longer an issue with the teammates.

Disney's Remember the Titans (2000) depicts the first season Herman Boone serves as head football coach of the T.C. Williams Titans in Alexandra, Virginia. The beginning of the movie shows how Bill Yoast, a Hall of Fame caliber coach, becomes the assistant coach to Herman Boone when Virginia public schools integrate in the early 1970's. Upon the temporary resolution to those coaching conflicts, the racially divided players and coaches go to football camp and learn how to become a team. In those scenes, Gerry Bertier and Julius Campbell emerge as leaders for the white and black team members respectively. Despite fighting each other and appearing to become enemies at first, they are able to put their differences aside and come to realize a common ground on which to build a close friendship. For the most part, the team itself is able to follow their example.
With reference to “Superman 1”, the leading lady, Lois Lane, is often placed in the face of danger and needs to be rescued. In the year in which “Superman 1” was created, woman were not yet seen as equal to men as they are in the present. With that in mind, Lois Lane would have been seen as a more independent woman as she was living alone in an apartment, working in a career field often dominated by men at the time of the movies creation, but never the less, Lois is still a passive woman who often is not able to escape from danger by herself. Is this film about Superman or about a mysterious bearded man who protects people once in every decade of his lifetime? One problem that the film has lies within the first hour of the movie - in which the film, having up to that point not yet really established Superman as a hero. Opposed to the original Superman in which Superman would be fully developed within the first scene of the movie. In addition to his powers being fully developed, Superman would have already established his arch nemesis as well. Many of the three-million members of the Klan took part in rallies, parades, and they even advocated for republican candidates during elections. Women also played a bigger role in the Klan, considering they began receiving the right to vote. They even went as far as to create the Women’s Ku Klux Klan (WKKK). Their views matched the men of the Klan at most times, but they also sought to fix things in the sphere of education and children. Women on the Edge of Time "Women on the Edge of Time" by Marge Piercy, is a novel that illustrates some problems of today’s society and compares them to a possible future time. The other world that is presented in the book is called Mattapoisett. Mattapoisett is described as an utopian science fiction place because it is much different from the place that Connie lived. Even though Mattapoisett might be the world that Connie’s culture needed, it is not a perfect world. Some of the problems that Marge Piercy presents in the book are poverty, women’s role, and problems of government, the environment, and prejudices that our society is facing today.
Men are looked at as brave, selfless people and are perceived as heroes all throughout society. Johnson addresses this point saying, “The idea of heroism, for example, has been appropriated almost entirely by patriarchal manhood. From movies and television to literature to the nightly news, our ideas of who and what is heroic focus almost entirely on men and what they do” (548). Since men have power in this world, they have generated a society that pleases them. Superhero movies are a huge money maker in today’s world. But, the most popular superheroes are exclusively men such as Batman, Superman, Captain America, The Flash and The Hulk. This media only feeds into the ideology that men are the heroes in the world and they are the ones making sacrifices for others. They see a world that appeals to them and do not see a reason to mess with the system. Kilbourne writes, “When power is unequal, when one group is oppressed and discriminated against as a group, when there is a context of systematic and historical oppression, stereotypes and prejudice have different weight and meaning” (499). Men now see patriarchy as natural and how life should be. They can look back at previous generations and see that they succeeded with patriarchy and feel they should do the same. I think we all know the difference between a Tv show and real life, although what happens when real life and a Tv show reflect social standards what then? The point I’m trying to make is that women in Tv shows seem to have the same amount of power as they usually are portrayed as in real life. The Sons of Anarchy is a hit television show about the lives outlaw motorcycle club members. Women play a large part in this television show taking on various different roles throughout the seasons. From police sheriffs to professional escorts women are almost always on the screen. These women are without a doubt strong willed individuals, which comes with the lifestyle they are apart of. However there is something that I cannot get past while watching the show and that is the possession the members of the club have over the women.
The purpose of the essay is to answer the question: How has Archie Comics reflected changing gender norms in the United States of America from World War II to the present of women in contemporary American society, in its eventual challenge of the position of men as the dominant sex, and in its inclusion of previously marginalized sexual orientations? As entertainment primarily targeted to middle-class America, Archie is a helpful avenue by which to understand acceptable views. This paper will present gender roles portrayed in Archie Comics in three different time frames: the Forties, the Sixties, and the new millennium. It will analyze the establishment of traditional gender roles set forth in the earliest Archie Comic strips. Next it will critique the ways in which it responded to the challenges to these traditional norms and assess whether the comic incorporated these challenges or rebuffed them. Finally, this paper will evaluate the role of modern-day Archie Comics as a vanguard in the new discussion of gender roles and sexual orientation in America. For the purpose of analysis, issues of Archie representative of the era will be examined in conjunction with larger historical developments. These include: the sexual revolution of the 1960s, the post-feminist world following the 1970s, and the rise of LGBT acceptance.
