The astonishing book, the Wednesday Wars, takes place in Kentucky in the 1960’s during the time of the Vietnam War. Education and social is in a different style then known today and religion played a big part of the people’s lives. The protagonist feels he is different from anyone else because he is the only Presbyterian in his class and on Wednesday's when all the Catholics go to Catechism and the Jews go to Hebrew school he is alone with his English teacher. And he believes for this reason and many untold of his 7th grade English teacher, Mrs.Baker, hates him and his guts. When he addresses this issue to his family his mother assures him that the teacher doesn’t hate him,his father tells him to be good to Mrs. Baker because she was related …show more content…

When Holling expresses his problem that his teacher hates him she says .” “Mrs.Baker hates your guts right? Then, Holling, you might try getting some” and she slammed the door.” (Schmidt, 9). This shows the malice of Heather not wanting to support Holling. She is only concerned about her own life and doesn’t care about her brother’s problems. Towards the end of the book, she says,”Holling, I was so afraid I wouldn’t find you. I was standing right there Heather and I’ll always be standing right there.” This shows the love between Holling/Heather and the ideal bond between / sister. Events such as Holling helping Heather when she was about run over by a car / supporting her when she ran away.
In conclusion, the author used a theme that conflict helps strengthen bonds. Some may argue that the main theme is about friendship. Though the author does mention this theme several themes it is not the main theme because it is not used often. The author spends more time emphasizing the value of relations between people and how they grow in times of conflict. Overall, the author uses emotional ways of the show not tell in a well-crafted novel to help readers know how we can connect it to our daily
