When you are standing in front of the ocean, do you find yourself lonely? Literally, you are not. Scientists believe that there are more than 1 million species in the ocean. Although you cannot see them when you are standing in front of the ocean; it doesn’t mean there are none. In Neradu’s poem, the young man finds himself lonely until he is awakened by the ocean, and make a change. He is not independent anymore because he is one of the tons of wave in the sea and who are going to join the “sea”. Neradu uses structure, sound, and metaphoric language to compose a poem that tells the story of a young man who is awakened by the wave of the sea and realizes that he is part of “movement”.

The poem sounds very unruffled because it contains a lot of soft sounds, such as “e”, “v”, “w”, and “sh”. Neruda uses words, “shivering”, “shining’, “shells” because the pronunciation of the words sounds like the sea. It is because “sh” sounds like water splash the sand or stone at the shoreline, so the poem gives a feeling of the sea. Apart from that, there is alliteration too, for an instant, “silver of salt”. The usage of alliteration can create a musical quality so that the poem is appealing and entertaining. Furthermore, there is no line rhyme in the poem, but there are a lot of internal rhyme. For example, in the first line of the first stanza, Neruda wrote, “I need the sea because it teaches me”. In this quote, “need’, “sea”, and “teach” are assonance. It makes the sentence sound brighter, in order to stand out the connection between himself and the sea, which can catch the attention of audiences.
