The children are spoiled with technology and hardly communicate with their parents. The parents are forced to shut down the house in order for their children to communicate with them, but the children are furious with the decision. The parents walk into to the nursery and find that it was their fate all along. Bradbury uses symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony throughout the story.
“Get off your phone.” “I’m taking that laptop away.” Many children have dealt with their parents barging into their rooms and telling them to get off their electronics. Parents believe it is not healthy and therefore should be restricted. Technology is being developed to encourage children to eat by enticing them with a video game. The application called ‘Yumit” records every bite the child takes and transmits it by Bluetooth to an application which allows 15 minutes of video time. The software does not encourage the child to interact with the family, but features the child alone. A study conducted by Boston University states that children learn better from direct contact with human contact. As a former Information Systems Manager I believe that we need to embrace technology in our children’s lives, as it does exist. We do not need to replace the family dinner time with technology. Children are common group of people who are generally mislabeled by society. In the short story “Charles’’ by Shirley Jackson and ‘’The Open Window” by Saki showed examples of the labeling of children. In “Charles” the concept of parents labeling their children as being pure and sincere was shown. As in “The Open Window” by Saki “used the notion that girls were the most truthful sex and gives her a name that suggests truthfulness to make her tale less suspect.”(Wilson 178). According to Welsh “Because the fantasy is so bizarre and inventive and totally unexpected from a fifteen-year-old girl, the reader is momentarily duped.”(03). This showed that even we as the readers were a victim of misleading labels of society.

After George had turned off the house, the kids began to wish dark and gruesome insults if the house wasn’t turned back on. These insults pressured George to turn the house back on and the children praised him. After this, the kids ran into the nursery, which has changed to Hawaii, and stayed there all night. In the morning, George called Peter and Wendy to the kitchen for breakfast but there was no response. George called the kids again but no answer again. This began to worry George and he called out to Lydia. Once again there was no answer and George become even more worried. George ran into the nursery and found the three of them in Hawaii having breakfast. With this discovery, George was relieved and sat with his family for breakfast.
Montag and Mildred were talking about their neighbors disappearance, Clarisse, and the conversation was very repetitive and showing a lack of interest during it (Bradbury 44). This conversation causes Montag to get upset because it is going nowhere and he is not getting any new information about Clarisse. According to the Daily Universe, 75% of teens and children have lived their lives looking at a screen. This overuse of screen time makes kids feel lonely and like they have no friends with their doors being shut and not interacting with people in real life. Every minute of technology is equivalent to 5 minutes of time spent talking to friends, family, or doing activities that calm and overactive the brain.

With the expansion in technology, children are hastily becoming more and more inactive. In the past century, kids would play outside from sunrise to sunset. Little did they realize, that playtime served as great daily exercise. Physical activity is a key necessity in keeping a healthy lifestyle. With the advancement of technology and the growing popularity of video games and television, fewer children are getting exercise. Stationary activities, such as video games and watching T.V., are keeping children inside and away from exercise. To blame just the kids for this lack of exercise would be wrong. The parents are the ones responsible for giving the children these games, but that is not all bad. Where it does turn bad however, is when the kids are given these games or televisions without a time restraint. Through research, they have found that 26% of children watch television for more than four hours a day. In the novel The Glass Castle the children also have to rely on themselves and each other because their parents have a abusive and neglectful parenting style.
