Around 4:00 PM on August tenth, 1628 the warship Vasa set sail in Stockholm harbor on its first trip as the freshest ship in the Royal Swedish Navy. In the wake of cruising around 1300 meters, a light blast of wind brought on the Vasa to heel over on its side. Water poured in through the weapon entrances and the ship sank with lost 53 lives. The Vasa lay in shallow waters of Stockholm harbor (at 32 meters profundity) and after beginning endeavors to rescue it fizzled, was to a great extent overlooked until it was situated by Anders Franken in 1956. The Lusitania was a British ocean liner in the early twentieth century that often ferried people and goods between the United States and Great Britain. During this time the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific were very dangerous due to World War I. Many people were warned that if they continued to make passage through the oceans they were at risk for being attacked, so they were told to be vigilant and take precautionary measures to ensure their safety. The most frightening of all became true for those aboard the Lusitania, “On May 7, 1915 the Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sunk, (History.com Staff).” Throughout this paper I will provide you with background on the Lusitania, what took place on May 7 prior to the sinking and the effects the sinking had international and political relations and how it shaped the rest of the war.

Absolutism was the most widespread political system used in Europe and in some parts of Asia from 1550-1750. The term Absolutism refers to a form of government by which the leader assumes power through the belief they have a divine God given right to rule with unlimited control. Several events probably contributed to this political system, the feudal wars of the 14th Century, the weakening and decline of the Catholic Church and the terms of the Treaty of Westphalia, which established that every European state would be given supreme authority over their own territories. While the style of the absolute ruler was similar in parts of Europe and Asia, the best example of the absolute ruler was King Louis XIV (1638-1715). King Louis XIV was crowned king in 1643, took complete control over France and swiftly declared his divine right to rule. He declared himself the, “Sun King”, took authority over all of Frances fiancés, economy and military, placed the church under his control and took power from the feudal nobility. King Louis XIV allowed the nobility to become part of his court and gave them positions of importance to gain their support. He did this to prevent the nobility from being a potential threat; to being his supporters. He even exempted them from paying taxes. This nobility dictated the aristocratic flare that King Louis XIV so flamboyantly displayed during his rule. It was the baroque style, the aristocratic style, in all its grandeur, greatness and flare for the extravagance. All 29 sailors perished with the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10th 1975. If you want to learn more about the ship you can visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point. A place where they proudly displayed the recovered ships bell in remembrance of the lost sailors and a place that is close to the final resting place of the ship.

My runway goals and my areas of responsibility kind of fall into the same bowl. As VPSA I have meeting that are both current action things, but also my responsibility. For instances I have a two on two meeting with Andrea Conner and Sarah Moshonross every week the Summer the president, then there are the weekly cabinet meeting, Campus Council, a one of either two meetings on Fridays, Thursday meeting, those would be my current actions or thing I know I need to do. When I write my list for the week my objective would be to either prepare for these meetings or just get them out of the way, depends on what has happened at school. Then there are my office hours which are more of a just show up. All of these things I would catorgize as current actions
World War II was coming to an end in 1945. During the WWII and postwar many important events took place, however, there is one historical event that occurred towards the end of the war. An event that has not been talked about till decades after it happened. We are all familiar with the sinking of the Titanic and thousands of lives that were lost the day the ship sunk. A similar event took place in the Baltic Sea in 1945 of a ship called Gustloff. The sinking is considered to be one of the deadliest marine tragedies ever to happen in the world. The author of Crabwalk, Gunter Grass was one of the few authors who shed light on the sinking of Gustloff through the stories of the fictional character Tulla Pokrefke, a survivor of the ship. Vanitas, found in many recent pieces, is a style of painting begun in the 17th Century by Dutch artists. Artists involved in this movement include Pieter Claesz, Domenico Fetti and Bernardo Strozzi . Using still-life as their milieu, those artists and others like them provide the viewer with ideas regarding the brevity of life. The artists are giving us a taste of the swiftness with which life can fade and death overtakes us all. Some late 20th Century examples were shown recently at the Virginia Museum of Art in Richmond, Virginia. Among the artists represented in this show were Miroslaw Balka (Polish, b. 1958), Christian Boltanski (French, b. 1944), Leonardo Drew (American, b. 1961), Felix Gonzalez-Torres (American, b.
