The USS Indianapolis delivered the Atomic Bomb, the bomb that ended WWII, to a naval base on the Pacific Island of Tinian on July 15 1945. 15 days later the ship was sank with 2 torpedoes, one hitting on the starboard side and the other struck about frame 50, amidships below the bridge. The first torpedo’s explosion caused a gas tank with 3,500 gallons of highly volatile aviation fuel to ignite into roaring flames. These torpedoes are the reason the ship sank and the 1,196 men were thrown into the shark infested waters.Although this attack is the reason most of these men died, it’s not why they died. Most of these men died trying to save millions of lives. This bomb stopped Japan in a screeching halt, and if this bomb was not delivered and wasn’t used it would have cost millions of Japanese and American people to lose their lives. The captain of the USS Indianapolis was Charles B. McVay when it was sunk by the Japanese. He endured the same pain and struggle as the other sailors did. He survived the 4-5 days in the ocean as the other sailors did but, his struggle continued until his death. The Navy wrongfully blamed the sinking of the USS Indianapolis on Captain McVay and his judgment. The navy court marshaled and reprimanded McVay from his titles. The Navy needed someone to blame for the sinking of the ship and McVay was the easiest target. The men of the
