Three of the main characters in Mary Shelley 's 1818 novel Frankenstein have commonalities that may not be immediately recognized but are significant in terms of theme. Robert Walton, a man who sets out to seek new land, Victor Frankenstein, a man who sets out to create new life, and the Creature, who sets out to become accepted, are all different in their own ways but tragically the same. Much like Walton, Frankenstein was alone in his childhood because he was an only child. Over time he acquires a fascination for science and begins to educate himself. “I was, to a great degree, self-taught with regard to my favorite studies. My father was not scientific, and I was left to struggle with a child’s blindness, added to a student’s thirst for knowledge” (Shelley 38). Frankenstein leaves his family at an early age to further his education. He has little to no contact with his family during this time, unless it’s by his terms. Frankenstein buries himself in his studies causing him to have few friends. By learning about his ways, it is obvious that he chose a life of solitude on his own. Though Frankenstein is comfortable being by himself, he does have one close friend, Clerval. This friendship is like the relationship Frankenstein has with his family, as it’s only a relationship when he wants it to be one. Even then, Frankenstein doesn’t confide in Clerval about the troubles he’s having with his experiment. Frankenstein chose to set his laboratory “in a solitary chamber, or rather cell, at the top of the house” (Shelley 52) in Ingolstadt. Many of the characters experience some time of isolation. The decisions and actions of some of these characters are the root cause of their isolation. They make choices that isolate themselves from everyone else.
Victor Frankenstein claims, “No human being could have passed a happier childhood than myself'; (Shelley, 19). His early life was filled with love and nurturing from his parents, his beautiful and adored companion Elizabeth, and his best friend Henry Clerval. However, after he leaves his home to continue his education at Ingolstadt, he remarks, “I, who had ever been surrounded by amiable companions, continually engaged in endeavoring to bestow mutual pleasure, I was now alone'; (Shelley, 25). Frankenstein no longer feels all the happiness he once felt when he was united with his family and friends. He alienates himself from others because he thinks he is “totally unfitted for the company of strangers'; (Shelley, 25).
In the book Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, one main character, Victor Frankenstein creates a monster. Both characters, Frankenstein and the monster become isolated as a result of this event. Isolation can have outcomes or an impact for the future events in the story. Frankenstein's monster is alienated from the "human" society because of his appearance, and that his creator doesn't want him, which leads the monster to go on a killing spree.

When people think of the story “Frankenstein”, they typically recall the story about a green monster with neck bolts; not an isolated monster who killed a bunch of people to get revenge on his creator. One can acquire many different themes from Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein creates a monster who becomes isolated due to neglect. In the monster’s case, the isolation caused the idea of revenge, which ended with destruction. “Frankenstein” highlights the theme that isolation causes destruction due to the amount of neglect, loneliness, and discrimination the monster faces throughout the book, which ultimately leads to the monster’s killing rampage.

Throughout time man has been isolated from people and places. One prime example of isolation is Adam, "the man [formed] from the dust of the ground [by the Lord God]" (Teen Study Bible, Gen. 2.7). After committing the first sin he secludes "from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken" (Teen Study Bible, Gen. 3.23). This isolation strips Adam from his protection and wealth the garden provides and also the non-existence of sin. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, is able to relate to the story of Adam and the first sin to help her character, the Creature, associate with Adam. The Creature is able to relate because "[l]ike Adam, [he is] apparently united by no link to any other being in existence" (Shelley 124). In other ways the creator of the creature, Victor Frankenstein, also identifies with the tale of the first human, but with a different character, God. "God created man in his own image" (Teen Study Bible, Gen. 1.27) and unlike Frankenstein "God saw all that he had made, and it was very good" (Teen Study Bible, Gen. 1.31). Frankenstein brought a life into the world but did not take the responsibility to lead and guide his creature to benefit himself or the created. Unlike God's creature who did in turn prosper. Instead of prosperity Frankenstein receives a life of loneliness and responsibility of many unnecessary deaths. The Creature, like his creator, lives his life in isolation from society. His only goal is to be loved and accepted by those around him. Through these circumstances the effects of isolation and loneliness are brought to life by the creature and the creator thought their pasts, social statuses, emotions, and dreams and fantasies.
Frankenstein's parents were very loving and he states that “No human being could have passed a happier childhood than myself” but he was only able to love them after seeing “other families [he] distinctly discerned how peculiarly fortunate [his] lot was” (34). Frankenstein was loved by his family but he was emotionally unattached from them and was only able to feel gratitude towards his loving family. When Frankenstein knew his mother had passed he was not affected by her loss and thought that his family should “learn to think [themselves] fortunate” (41). The person that gave him life had passed but Frankenstein never developed an intimate connection to her and was more concerned about his desire for knowledge. Frankenstein also runs from the chance at having a father son relationship in favor of a God and creation relationship when he rejects the “one hand [that the creature] stretched out” (56). The possibility at having a relationship as intimate as a father and son had Frankenstein running from his creation and leaving it like god left humans on Earth. Frankenstein’s friendships were also lacking intimacy he “loved [his friend] with a mixture of affection and reverence that knew no bounds, yet [he] could never persuade [himself] to confide in” his friend (66). An idea becomes a vision, the vision develops a plan, and this plan becomes an ambition. Unfortunately for Victor Frankenstein, his ambitions and accomplishments drowned him in sorrow from the result of many unfortunate events. These events caused Victors family and his creation to suffer. Rejection and isolation are two of the most vital themes in which many dreadful consequences derive from. Victor isolates himself from his family, friends, and meant-to-be wife. His ambitions are what isolate him and brought to life a creature whose suffering was unfairly conveyed into his life. The creature is isolated by everyone including his creator. He had no choice, unlike Victor. Finally, as the story starts to change, the creature begins to take control of the situation. It is now Victor being isolated by the creature as a form of revenge. All the events and misfortunes encountered in Frankenstein have been linked to one another as a chain of actions and reactions. Of course the first action and link in the chain is started by Victor Frankenstein.
Fire is essential for the novel, also. It’s one of the discoveries of the monster. He notices that if he gets closer to the fire, it burns him; if he goes far away, it does not warm him. So, no more no less, he experiences the fire. As it is mentioned: “You can let it warm you, but don’t let it burn you.”
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein tackles the hard-hitting topic of alienation and its source of origination. Alienation is being isolated from a group that you should belong to, which in Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein’s creation is excommunicated from society. The novel from 1818 divulges the strain of involuntary seclusion on the creature and its subsequent effects in the creature’s actions. The struggles between appearance and social acceptance are the profound source of alienation because society has superficial prejudices against appearances that make it impossible for someone that does not fit the standard to be accepted.
Isolation is often a result of choosing to seek refuge in solitude, however, in many cases, it is a result of brutality from the surrounding environment. In Mary Shelley’s Gothic novel, Frankenstein, a gruesome and painful story serves as a cautionary tale in order to prevent another from a similar downfall. Although Victor Frankenstein is the narrator for the majority of the novel, the audience learns of the destruction that has followed his decisions as well as the forced estrangement upon those he has encountered. In Frankenstein, Shelley uses relatable characters that reflect the harsh superficial aspects of society. Victor’s initial isolation as a child foreshadows the motif of detachment that occurs throughout the novel.
