Many people have given speeches like his, but the significance of this lecture was the passion he showed and still felt for this Earth, and its people, after all the horrible events that had happened to him in his life. He tells anyone who will listen to his speech to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. The world thrives for equality but how can a world grow and unit if the people are silent. One rhetorical feature that Elie Wiesel uses effectively is pathos. By including the story of the young boy and his journey, the audience gets a sense of somberness about the events that took place and the situations the Jews were put into. When the young boy says, “Tell me, what have you done with my future? What have you done with your life?” he is questioning Wiesel about the impact he has made in the world. Those questions make the audience wonder what they have done to help the oppressed and all those who have perished. This part of the speech makes the audience feel a sense of grief so strong, that they are moved to help him in his fight against the people who have forgotten and the people who have stayed silent.

In “The Perils of Indifference” Elie Wiesel uses several techniques to get his point across. Three of them in the speech are Ethos, Repetition, and Pathos. He uses a combination of the three elements throughout the paragraphs of his speech to attract the readers. The combination of these elements help draw the reader’s emotions and interest towards his subject. He focuses on word choice that would pertain to his audience’s level of vocabulary.
Having an opinion and or a belief is better than not having one at all. A great man such as Elie Wiesel would agree to that statement. He believes standing up for what is right by showing compassion for a fellow human being than for letting good men do nothing while evil triumphs. The message he passes was how indifference is showing the other man he is nothing. This situation introduced two polar opposite aspects–a loss of trust in what is unseen versus a change of trust in what is seen. Yet, in both cases, the decision to make those life-altering changes was undoubtedly a difficult one. To lose your faith is one thing, especially when that faith has shaped who you are. For that reason, it makes sense that on page 69, Wiesel felt as if a void had ripped open inside him when he lost his faith in G-d. Nevertheless, to refill that hole with trust for another man, one as cruel and wicked as Adolf Hitler, is unimaginable.
He says, “These failures have cast a dark shadow over humanity: two World Wars, countless civil wars, the senseless chain of assassinations,... so much violence; so much indifference.” (4). Indifference is shown by not only the people involved in these violent events, but also Wiesel’s audience as well, many clueless of these events. For one to fail to know and understand these events in order to stop and bring awareness to them is just as wrong as committing the event in the first place, according to Wiesel. One must also believe the event itself to escape the corruptive qualities of indifference. During the Holocaust, many did not believe what was happening and chose to then ignore it rather than do anything about it. Wiesel has dedicated his life to helping others because he knows what it is like to be alone and suffering. As a great example to the people, he explains, “that every moment is a moment of grace, every hour an offering; not to share them would mean to betray them. Our lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all those who need us desperately” (Wiesel 13). Elie makes the audience feel guilty for not helping those that needed their help the most and for taking their freedom for granted. By making them feel guilty, he is actually pushing the audience to do more to help their community. The reader feels inspired and challenged to dedicate their life, like Wiesel, to helping the oppressed. Wiesel has an impact on his listeners by using pathos and encouraging them to never stay neutral and to never stay silent.
Anaphora is a rhetorical device that constantly repeats a sequence of words at the beginning of a sentence. This is used to bring emphasis and rhythm to a word and also allow the audience to remember a certain idea or quote. In addition, an anaphora gives an effect to a speech and appeals to the audience emotion. Elie Wiesel uses multiple anaphora to emphasize certain parts of his speech to give off a certain tone.
