The Titanic The RMS Titanic was an extremely well-known British passenger liner that was created on March 31st, 1912. Construction on the British passenger liner started on March 31st 1909, so it took exactly three years to create the Titanic (loc.gov). The RMS Titanic was captained by Edward Smith, who served as master to many White Star Line vessels (wikipedia.com). He had numerous amounts of successful voyages and was full of experience going into the Titanics’ voyage. He was more than qualified, he was perfect for the job. At 11:40 pm while sailing at night in the pitch black, the Titanic hit an extremely large ice glacier that damaged the side of the boat and the boat started to leak water (titanicfacts.net). The ice glacier had been spotted and reported around 11:39 pm, but by then it was far too late to avoid it. From the point that the Titanic hit the glacier to the point the the boat was completely under water was a total of 2 hours and 40 minutes. A lot of people claim that the Titanic was built to be “unsinkable”. It was built with a double layered bottom, so the if for any reason at all they happened to hit something hard enough to damage the first layer, there would be a second layer to keep the large passenger liner from sinking. However, nobody had thought that there was a possibility that the boat would be struck higher than the bottom two layers. When the RMS Titanic struck the glacier, it had produced a large hole that was above the bottom of the boat where the two layers were created for safety. Because of this, the Titanic slowly started to leak water all throughout the boat and the Titanic would reach its final destination (sampson.washcoll.edu). The Titanic then began to sink from the front end down. Almost immediately, passengers were awaken by the sound and strange movement of the large passenger liner. Many of the ship's staff rushed down the halls and yelled for people to wake up to get them to higher levels of the ship before it was too late. At the time, there was lots of competition to see who could sail across the Atlantic Ocean the fastest. Bruce Ismay, President of White Star Line, wanted to prove that his company could sail across the Atlantic in six days, so he pressured Captain E.J. Smith to not slow down as they passed through an ice field. A book about the Titanic was released in 2008, called What Really Sank the Titanic: New Forensic Discoveries, and mentioned the competition White Star Line had with other companies, specifically Cunard Line. On page ten, it said that Cunard’s transformation of twentieth-century liners won support and popularity, and stripped White Star Line of its fame. It then said that “under pressure from the success of Cunard's masterpiece and speculation over the lucrative future of German ventures, Lord Pirrie, head of Harland and Wolff, and Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line, came to the table to devise a counterattack, whose sheer size and magnificence would guarantee headlines." This British ocean liner was one of the biggest cruise ships ever made. The ship began its maiden voyage in the early morning of April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England to New York City. Mainly the ships 2,200 passengers were of deathly upper-class families looking for a good time in the city, while a smaller amount was people going to the city to find work. Many thought that when they board the ship, they were in for the trip of a lifetime. Well, that trip soon ended in tragedy. The Titanic sank early in the morning on the 15th when the ship hit an iceberg. Captain Edward J. Smith had the ship sailing full speed ahead despite the concerns about several icebergs. The ship received multiple warnings about dangerous ice fields in the North over the telegraph. General Corfield who was in charge of warning the captain of any obstacles along the way, said he failed to pass the warning along by senior radio operator, Jack Phillips. The “unsinkable” was actually built with very sinkable cheap material. It was built with low-grade iron rivets instead of the more expensive higher-grade material rivets. The Titanic claimed to be the ship of its time; one that would never sink. However, what the Titanic claimed to be was not the case because on April 15, 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg, broke in half, and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. There has been debate ever since that fateful day as to how this happened to the Titanic. Some conspiracy theorist believe the ship never even sank -- regardless of the ships remains at the bottom of the ocean. Other conspiracy theorists believe the Titanic was actually switched with the RMS Olympic because of an insurance scam. Ever since that day, many scientists, engineers, and physicists have tried to analyze the problems of the Titanic; the reasons why it sank.
The RMS Titanic; A Tragedy Based on Class. In April, 1912, the so called "unsinkable" Titanic set sail to New York. The great ship was as big as five city blocks, and weighed thousands and thousands of tons. Everyone who was everyone grabbed a room on the luxurious ship for the trip of a lifetime. “We are in collision with berg. Sinking head down. 41.46° N, 50.41° W. Come soon as possible.” At 11:20 P.M. the “Unsinkable” ship sent this wireless distress message to the Olympic. But the Olympic did not get there in time. If the Titanic did not sink so fast then the Olympic and other ships could have gotten there in time to save all of the passengers. If the Titanic was built better then that would not be a problem. The Harland and Wolff Shipyard Company is to blame for the sinking of the Titanic and the high number of casualties because the wrong materials were used, the layout and design were poor, and they were too confident with their ship that safety was not a concern.

The Titanic was built to be unsinkable, with 16 watertight compartments to help keep it afloat. Many people called the R.M.S. Titanic “unsinkable”, because of how large it was. Thomas Andrews made several faults when designing the Titanic. Blueprints were not even made for the Titanic. He made sixteen watertight compartments and this was one of the reasons people thought it was unsinkable. But Thomas made compartments smaller than they needed to be, height wise, so that there was more room for the first class passengers. Since it was too small, the doors in the compartments were mostly open. Since they were left open five of the compartments flooded, the ship needed four flooded to stay afloat. The ship, R.M.S Titanic, has been popular several different times in a little over 100 years. The first time in April 1912 when it first sailed for North America. This great ship was said to be unsinkable. Many errors led to the major tragedy of the Titanic, including the life boats were not all there or filled as much as they should have been, the ship tried to go full speed to break the iceberg, and the Californian ship did not respond the Carpathia had saved the rest.
Damage beyond the hull was also witnessed that allowed for the influx of water. The Unsinkable Ship That Sank On the day of April 12,1912, Titanic was thought to be the dream ship that could never be destroyed. Like today’s society, the passengers were enjoying the time of their lives and thought nothing could ever happen to them because everybody thinks it’s the “unsinkable” ship, or at least that’s what everyone knew it to be. White Star Line’s Titanic was called the “Ship of dreams”. As they loaded up, many passengers of different classes and sectors of society thought that, that was the ticket to their dreams. But as time pass by from enjoying too much, little do they know that the ship is sinking.
Thomas Andrews was the designer of the Titanic and its sister ships. His original designs of the ships was to have a double hull ship, 46 lifeboats and have the watertight bulkheads go all the way up to B deck. While he was on the ship inspecting it, he had written down notes to improve the ship. His designs were either vetoed or removed in the ship building process. One reason on why his original design were vetoed or removed because of money. If Andrews’s designs were not vetoed or removed, the Titanic would probably have been able to withstand the crash with iceberg and there would not be a design error. Since they had not followed the original design the ship was not a double hull ship, only had 20 life boats that did not suffice the amount of people on the ship and all the watertight bulkheads did not go all the way up to B deck. When the Titanic had hit the iceberg, water immediately started to flood the ship and would slowly pass the water line that was made after the original design. Once the water passed those water lines and started to fill into the other compartments the ship only had a few hours left to stay afloat. The water filled into the other water compartments like falling dominos and would continue until the ship was filled with water and break into two pieces. The Titanic, one of the biggest well known tragedies in history. The horrific accident was a catastrophe that impacted the world. Devastating news that this colossal ship everyone thought was indestructible had sunk from a collision with an iceberg. But the question is, could the terrible tragedy have been stopped? Why did the Titanic give so easily following the hit?
