The story begins with D’Artagnan, a poor young man from Gascony sets out to make riches in Paris. He is carrying a letter of recommendation from his father’s friend, Monsieur de Treville, captain of the king’s musketeers. Which grants him acceptance into the Royal academy to learn fencing, riding, and good manners, expecting to become a musketeer. When D’Artagnan is waiting for a new letter of introduction from Treville, he spots the man who robbed him out of the window and pursues him. While pursuing him he angers the three musketeers; first he bumps into Athos, re-injuring his shoulder, then sideswipes Porthos, revealing his fraudulent golden shoulder belt, lastly he offends Aramis by revealing a lady’s handkerchief. In result, the Duke of Buckingham orders his personal jeweler to make two replacement tags, then he sends all twelve back to Paris with D’Artagnan- surprising the Cardinal when she appears with them all. For D’Artagnan’s courageous act, the Queen rewards him with a elegant diamond ring. After, he is told by Constance that it’s no longer safe to remain in Paris, so D’Artagnan figures it’s a perfect time to find out what happened to the musketeers. He finds them in the spot he left them, they return to Paris together, all in the need of money. While brainstorming ideas on how to obtain cash, D’Artagnan runs into Milady and is attracted by her beauty. He ends up protecting her from aggravating man, who turns out to be her brother-in-law, Lord de Winter. Lord de Winter challenges D’Artagnan to a duel, they fight and D’Artagnan overpowers the Lord, but spares him. Thankful for his life, Lord de Winter introduces D’Artagnan to Milady, Lady de Winter. Meanwhile Milady’s maid falls in love with D’Artagnan and shares with him that Milady is passionately in love with Count de Wardes- the man D’Artagnan wounded before sailing to …show more content…

D’Artagnan meets up with Milady and while she thinks she’s making love to Wardes, it’s actually D’Artagnan. After, she gives D’Artagnan a sapphire ring and curses D’Artagnan for hurting Wardes, the man she thinks is with her. D’Artagnan is furious, so he forges another letter to Milady from Wardes, insulting her. Milady is so irate that she asks D’Artagnan to kill Wardes, taking him to bed for a down payment, after D’Artagnan is mesmerized and he shares with her their first encounter, when he took the role of Wardes. Milady goes berserk and her nightgown gets torn off and D’Artagnan spots her convict brand, now that her secret is out, she vows to kill him, but he escapes. D’Artagnan later finds out from Athos that Milady used to be his wife, until he saw her convict brand and had her hung. In response, they sell the ring to buy equipment for the siege of La Rochell.
