The infamous trial of Joan of Arc began on January 9, 1431, and ended with her execution at the stake in the Old Market Square of Rouen on May 30th. News of the trial traveled quickly and immediately became a favorite topic in contemporary chronicles, and rightfully so. “Nearly every Christian land told of her many actions harming the true faith” (pg 48) and as a result, Joan achieved international notoriety for her crimes. Among the seventy accusations against Joan, were the overarching themes of the trial, disregarding traditional gender roles by wearing the clothing of men and publicizing many things contrary to the Catholic faith by claiming to hear voices from God via his angels and saints. To automatically dismiss anyone that claims to be a prophetess, to mute the voices, call the individual deranged and to put the issue aside, is quite a normal reaction. In Joan’s case however, simply dismissing her claims is impossible because her voices directed her every move. Her main defense against both the charges of heresy and disregarding gender roles was that she was following the directions of God. This is clear when she states at the outset of the trial, “I have done nothing but through revelation (pg 53).” This is a tough statement to argue for and against. There is no tried and true method to determining whether or not these voices were divine or from some other source. Joan believed, as firmly as she believed in the Christian faith, that the voices came from God because she knew them well and could distinguish them by their voices and their appearances. The problem was that she could offer no other proof besides her testimony. Joan was allowed to defend herself to the best of her ability, but the verdict was predetermined. Joan had not sought consultation from the Church before reversing these voices and feared them more than the Church itself, therefore she had sinned, regardless of if the voices were really from God or
