The Theme of Carelessness in The Great Gatsby
The idea of carelessness plays an important role in The Great Gatsby.
Daisy, Tom, Jordan, Gatsby and Nick were all careless at some points throughout
the book. Daisy and Tom were careless about their relationship, their money,
and many of their daily activities. Gatsby was also unconcerned with his money.
Jordan was blasé about the way she treated other people.
"They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and
creatures and then retreated back to their money or their vast carelessness, or
whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess
they had made. . . ."(189) This was an accurate description of the way Tom and
Daisy acted. They were constantly neglectful of the way they behaved and when
they realized they were wrong, they would retreat back to their money. It was
always other people that had to pay for Tom and Daisy's careless mistakes.
Daisy also admitted that she was careless in a dialogue with Nick.
"I am careful."
"No, you're not"
"Well, other people are," she said lightly.
"What's that got to do with it?"
"They'll keep out of my way," she insisted. "It takes two to make an accident."
"Suppose you meet somebody just as careless as yourself."
"I hope I never will," she answered. "I hate careless people."(63)
She quickly responded to Nick that she doesn't need to be careful.
Daisy implied that it is the other person's responsibility to be mindful of her.
She also said that she hates careless people right after she admitted that she
was careless. Daisy was indifferent about her relationship with Tom. She knew
that her husband was having an affair with another women but Daisy did not do
anything about it.
Tom was careless in a much more obvious way. He was brutal as well as
destructive. Tom felt that he could do anything he wanted and get away with it.
He would never admit that he was dispassionate because he was egotistical. Tom
was careless in his relationship with Daisy, his wife, and Myrtle Wilson, his
lover. He allowed Gatsby to win his wife's love.
But he is not in any way greatful for any of it. Despite everything Tom has he still belittles others, and cheats on Daisy. Tom has a racial attitude, for example, he disapproves interracial marriage. He is very egoistic and has a high opinion of himself. Scott Fitzgerald creates the characters in this book to live and recreate past memories and relationships. This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.

Death is something that comes to everyone at some point in their lives. No one knows when they will die until it happens. Some are prepared for death and others are completely blind sided by death. In the novel “The Great Gatsby”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby is killed by the character Wilson, because of rumors that Gatsby Killed Wilson's wife Myrtle as well as having an affair with her. The author continuously characterizes Tom in a way that makes the readers deride him and not want to follow the example of his like. For example, after Tom's wife takes all their valuables and tries to strike a bargain with the devil as Tom won't do it himself, Tom goes looking for her. The reader sees that he doesn't really care about her as much as he cares about the valuables: "He leaped with joy; for he recognized his wife's apron, and supposed it to contain the household valuables"(263). That shows that he is really greedy and ruthless; no one wants to follow someone portrayed like that. Furthermore, Tom had evidence that his wife was fighting with the devil when she tried to strike that bargain. The passage that provides his reaction has a satirical tone: "He shrugged his shoulders, and he looked at the signs of a fierce clapper clawing."Egad," said he to himself, "Old scratch must have had a tough time if it!" Tom consoled himself for the loss of his property, with the loss of his wife"(264). We do not know much about Tom’s childhood; however it is clear that his life has progressed into a sociopathic lifestyle. We do know that, “[His] parents died when [he] was very small” and that “[He] was raised by [his] aunt in Boston.” (25) He disliked his aunt, hated her, and wanted to kill her.
Fitzgerald elegantly describes Daisy as an innocent yet charming young woman who is married to a wealthy man, Tom. “her face was sad and lovely with things bring in”this suggests that Daisy is not as simple as she wants us to think, like a absurd and shining girl. For instance, in the text before she uses the word “witty” to describe her graphic and humorous manner. She tries to cover her sadness by putting on a passionate mask.
In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses reckless driving as a metaphor to show the carelessness of the wealthy characters. Many of the characters are reckless drivers, such as Jordan Baker and Daisy Buchanan. They don’t seem to care about the well-being of other drivers that they may hurt from being bad drivers. In the novel, driving techniques symbolize social status and character which later channels death and destruction. In The Great Gatsby, the author uses reckless driving as a metaphor to show readers how people of higher social class live their lives in destructive ways.
Tom Wingfield is a determined young man. He has decided against everyone else in his family's wishes that he wants to leave the dismal life of a factory job, to pursue a chance in the Merchant Marines. He realizes that he would be running off like his father and this is probably the only thing that kept him from leaving this long. Amanda, Tom's mother, deep down knows the day is coming that Tom will leave. She says "But not till there's someone to take your place." She wants Laura, if not herself to be taken care of. At that moment in the play Tom is the breadwinner in the family and up to this point Tom is the underpriviledged child that wants to move on. He wants to pursue his dream, a more adventurous life. Tom was a likable character until we find out he didn't pay the electric bill with the intended money. When Jim is over and he says "I paid my dues this month, instead of the light bill". At this point, Tom becomes a more selfish character. There is less sympathy given in his direction. In fact, this is probably where we feel a little more sorry for Amanda.
Daisy's carelessness reveals her corruption as a human being. She uses her wealth and social status to escape whatever she chooses, like the death of Myrtle. Additionally, her actions demonstrate the dishonest exploitation of power for personal gain and attention. When identifying the target market it is important to know who buys your product and who your customers are. Smart targeting benefits the consumer as well as the company. It allows the company to be more efficient and effective by focusing effort toward that segment; therefore maintaining the most profitable outcome. The consumer is rewarded by receiving the product or service that is customized for them.
Tom is a character many people in this generation can relate to. Although the play was written many years ago Tom is just like any other millennial from this day and age. He basically hates his job because it’s not fun. He can’t cope with the fact that he has to pick up all the slack his father left behind. He even seems to think that running away will fix everything. All of these things are very common in society today.
To begin with, it is crucial to appreciate the meaning of segmentation and targeting because these two terms lay the foundation for this report. Consequently, segmentation is dividing a market, into groups of consumers with homogenous traits in order to provide each group with the desired product. What is the meaning of targeting? It is where an enterprise evaluates every segment with an objective of identifying segments with promising business opportunities. Considering the nature of the product in question, it sufficed to mention that liquor- filled chocolates are to be sold to adults.
His antics were ingenious though. The way that he turned whitewashing the fence as a punishment into a grand experience for all of the boys in town who couldn’t wait to hold the brush and paint. Tom was not a bad boy, just an inquisitive one who’s mind never rested… always dreaming, and making his dreams sound so good, he could always rope Huck Finn into his escapades. Tom couldn’t lie, and he couldn’t see someone suffer for the sins of another, as seen when he tells the truth about the murder of Dr. Robinson. It took real guts to point the finger at "Injun Joe", the half-breed, who was also one of the most despicable scoundrels in the town. Tom was also loyal to his friends, and showed that when he wouldn’t tell that Huck Finn was with him that night the doctor was killed in the graveyard. Tom also couldn’t leave Becky Thatcher in the cave when they were lost and she had all but given up hope of being found.
