After long busy days they all come together and are able to spend time together. It is very important to not get to caught up in life and forget the true meaning and the importance of family. Grandpa and Douglas work together to set up the porch swing on the front porch of Grandpa’s house. After a long day the whole family gathers together on the front porch as a family. I think that this is such a great thing that they all do together. I love how they all gather together at grandpa and grandma’s house. A lot of times our lives get very busy and we lose simple things, like all gathering together at the end of a day. While reading chapter 7 I could really tell how much Douglas enjoyed this time he had with his family. This was really cool to read about this and realize how important family time is to Douglas. This time they all work together to clean the rugs. While beating the dust and dirt out of the rugs they all joke around and tell stories. While doing this Tom studies the rugs and claims that he can see things in them. He thinks in the patterns of the rugs he can see all the people that have walked on them and begins telling stories about different things that those people did. The family all finds Tom’s stories very funny and a good way to pass by the time. I think that this chapter really shoes how important team work is and working together as a family. If one person had to clean all of these rugs alone it would take an extremely long time. With the help of the whole family it gets done a lot faster. While working together they all get to bond together also. This is really cool to see and I love how they all like to spend so much time
In conclusion, the story describes that life changes, and nothing stays the same throughout it. It is in the hands of the people to decide that how they want their life to be. They can make it as beautiful as they want to and they can also make it worse than it has ever been
The historical information provides a background for the cultural impact. Dealing with loss is a part of the information. It is a hard thing to do, and the Welch children had to do that in their memoir. When dealing with loss, children need a stable environment because they might think what they have done caused the death ("When" 1). Children can be easily swayed, so they might formulate their own theory as to how their loved one died. Consequently, they might think of it to be their own fault; they have no one else to give the blame, so they drop it on themselves. Also, "children need help to cope with their grief when a parent dies" ("When" 1). Kids need someone to talk to about their loss. The person should have an understanding of children. All in all, the story was rather sad but eye-opening. I believe Porter’s approach to writing this story allowed readers to reflect back on their own lives and examine both the good and not-so-good times. It shows people not to just live life through the motions, but rather, to look at it as beautiful journey as no one wants to end up like Granny Weatherall and realize that with she never really lived.
I always looked at death as such a sad thing that is eventually going to occur to everyone. However, after reading this book, it made me realize death can actually be a beautiful thing. Death allows a person to go to a next life, one where they will be loved and others will be there for them. It was interesting to be able to read about stories that these hospice care workers witnessed themselves. I have experienced a few deaths within my life and I never coped with them very well. After reading this book, I honestly believe I will be able to look at the positive side of death and be able to deal with my emotions better. I can also help others surrounding me deal with a death that they are experiencing. This book was filled with information that I loved learning. For example, I never knew that a dying person can choose a time to die. The thought of this never occurred to me before. I always thought that when it was someone’s time to go, they had no choice. But, a dying person can “put off” passing on until they see a certain person or event that has great significance in their life. Nevertheless, there are still people who will wait to die until they’re all alone in the room. This book makes you think of real life situations and think what you would do in them. The theme of this novel is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death. The moral of the book is; "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to, even right up to the end."
Granny seems to be bitter about somethings, but not about the life and love she had with her husband. Granny says, “I wouldn’t exchange my husband for anybody except St. Micheal himself.” (Porter, 210) Though not ready for death, “I’m not going, Cornelia. Through an intimate maternal bond, Michaels mother experiences the consequences of Michaels decisions, weakening her to a debilitating state of grief. “Once he belonged to me”; “He was ours,” the repetition of these inclusive statements indicates her fulfilment from protecting her son and inability to find value in life without him. Through the cyclical narrative structure, it is evident that the loss and grief felt by the mother is continual and indeterminable. Dawson reveals death can bring out weakness and anger in self and with others. The use of words with negative connotations towards the end of the story, “Lonely,” “cold,” “dead,” enforce the mother’s grief and regressing nature. Thus, people who find contentment through others, cannot find fulfilment without the presence of that individual.

Instead of just throwing the topic of death into his reader’s faces, he tries to slowly ease them into it. Starting with the death of a tree, it is something so miniscule and less emotional. It allows Lewis to bring up the topic of death without bringing up so many emotions. Then to head deeper into the conversation he talks about the death of a small animal, a mouse. If my life had no purpose, no individuality, and no happiness, I would not want to live. This book teaches the importance of self expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.

Grief played a large role in the lives of the Boatwright sisters and Lily Owens. They each encountered death, injustice, and sadness. Grief impacted and left an imprint on each of them. Grief proved fatal for May. August knew that grief was just another aspect of life; that it had to be accepted and then left in the past. June and Lily learned to not let grief rule their lives.
