In the short story, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber,” Hemingway uses the author’s craft of various perspectives as well as internal and external dialogue to create a multi-part claim that develops an overall negative characterization of Francis Macomber. In the development of Macomber’s character, Hemingway develops his characterization as cowardly, fearful, and confident or brave by using multiple perspectives as he threads a negative tone throughout the story.
Topic Sentence: Through the different perspectives of Macomber, Margaret, and Wilson, Hemingway shows Macomber to be cowardly by using the element of dialogue.
Example #1: By using the perspective of Francis Macomber, Hemingway reveals Macomber to be a coward in saying,
Example #2: By using Wilson’s inner dialogue as well as conversations, Hemingway exhibits Macomber’s cowardly portrayal through Wilson’s point of view. Wilson displays his feelings toward Macomber’s cowardice ways in saying, “Why don’t you go over and join the Memsahib while I just get it over with?” (pg. 12)
Explain: In Wilson’s question of Macomber, he implies that Macomber is acting womanly because of his fear of encountering the lion. Wilson becomes aggravated with the constant talking and numerous questions that Macomber never ceases to ask, and by asking all of those questions, Wilson sees Macomber’s spineless self, which resembles that of a woman in Wilson’s eyes. Wilson sees Macomber as dehumanized because of the way he becomes a pushover when his wife enters the picture and how he runs away from anything that looks scary.
Transition: Also, Macomber’s cowardice is shown through his wife’s disrespectful comments and continuous degrading of her husband’s personality.
