Speech Good afternoon fellow HSC students my name is Mr Zec from the University of Wollongong and I’m here to talk about the play The Shifting Heart and the related text Hospital Evening. The Shifting Heart is a play written in 1957 by Richard Beynon, and it is set in Collingwood in Melbourne. The scene consists of an untidy backyard with a large garbage can, the right fence has barbed wire running across it and the left fence is broken with rusty nails in it. It takes place at the afternoon of Christmas Eve to the morning of Christmas day. Throughout the play the language used is usually either stereotypical Australian or Italian. The play is about an Italian family who migrated to Australia in the 1950s. There are lots of racist comments and discrimination throughout the play. The characters include Momma, Poppa, Maria, Clarry (Maria’s Husband), Leila, Donny, (Leila’s Husband), Gino and a rather brief appearance of Detective Sergeant Lukie. Momma and Poppa are native Italians while their children Gino and Maria talk in Australian slang and are more Australian like. Leila Pratt is the neighbour to the left with Donny being her husband. …show more content…

Even Leila makes racial comments about Poppa every now and then. Throughout the play Gino faces many racial issues of his own being the Bianchi’s son. Gino is always getting into fights and eventually in the end he tries to get into a club but they don’t let him in because he is Italian and he ends up getting into a fight and results in the death of Gino due to racial
