Simon Wiesenthal’s book The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness spoke to me about the question of forgiveness and repentance. Simon Wiesenthal was a Holocaust prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. He experienced many brutal and uneasy experiences that no human being should experience in their lifetime and bear to live with it. Death, suffering, and despair were common to Simon Wiesenthal that he questioned his own religious faith because he asks why would his God allow the Holocaust happen to his people to be slaughter and not do anything to save them. During Simon Wiesenthal time as a Jewish Holocaust, Simon was invited to a military hospital where a dying Nazi SS officer wanted to have a conversation. The Nazi SS officer told Simon his story of his life and confesses to Simon of his horrific war crimes. Ultimately, the SS officer wanted forgiveness for what he done to Simon’s Jewish people. Simon Wiesenthal could not respond to his request, because he did not know what to do with a war criminal that participate in mass genocide to Simon’s people. Concurring your fear will take most, if not all the power away from it. “The Seventh Man” elucidates the effects of fear and how it keeps one from reaching their full potential. Whether you chose to fight or fly, the impact will be as great as you let it. In “The Seventh Man”, Murakami uses similes, foreshadowing and symbolism to develop the theme that it is better to face one's fears then to turn one's back on them.
Fear is a part of everyone’s life, but it is how it is handled that makes all the difference. In the story “The Seventh Man” by Haruki Murakami, a tragedy consumes a young boy and stays with him for many years. As the story continues, the narrator eventually realizes that he has to face his fear in order to lead a normal life. In “The Seventh Man”, Murakami develops the theme that one should face his or her fear with the use of similes, imagery, and symbolism.
Although, specifically, the difference between guilt and remorse is that “remorse is experienced when the guilt about the hostile wishes was insufficient to prevent acting," remorse is a sufficient part of preventing an event from recurring and changing one's life in the future (Marriot 9). One can never heal if they cannot first learn to experience regret and later learn to tolerate and overcome that regret. There must be a proper balance because being overwhelmed by regret is just as negative as never feeling any remorse at all. In Simon Wiesenthal’s The Sunflower on the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness the author is asked to fulfill a dying solider last wish to forgive him because of the crimes he has committed against the Jewish people of the Holocaust. When Wiesenthal is asked for forgiveness, he simply leaves the room. Wiesenthal states that the encounter with the dying man left “a heavy burden” (Wiesenthal 55) on him. Has there ever been a time in your life where you had to experience a tragedy. The Seventh Man did. The seventh man was only ten years old on a september afternoon when a typhoon hit his home town of Providence of S. During the eye of the storm, he and his friend named K went down to the beach. A wave hit and killed K but the seventh man was able to escape. For the rest of the seventh man’s life, he had to deal with survivor's guilt until he was able to forgive himself. Should the seventh man forgive himself of his failures? Yes, The seventh man should forgive himself of all responsibility of K’s death.
Life as we all know is full of disappointment and filled with disparity. Most of us are able to go through these and learn from and forgive ourselves. Yet, this isn’t always the case. People are faced with traumatic experiences that often take a long time to get over, if they ever do get over it. These experiences brew in our brain popping up at the most random points often bringing our spirits down. Although these experiences may scar us and fill us with regret and guilt, we can’t continue to live in the past and let these regrets haunt us. Self forgiveness is a key to healing and to moving on in life, no matter how hard it is.
Referring to Nancy Sherman’s The Moral Logic of Survivor Guilt in paragraph 16 she states, “even in the best circumstances, we can’t perfectly fulfill them.” Moral repair is simply the act of self-satisfaction. No physical, social actions are held but rather the matter of mental and emotional satisfaction. People of today’s society have this mindset that everybody has responsibility, especially for things they have no control over. Society has formed and influenced minds that one must take responsibility and often times, people blame themselves especially for uncontrollable events and actions. This is the normative standards. Like the Seventh Man, he’d tried to find reason and claim self-responsibility as an act of self acceptance towards the end when he’d return back to Nagano after forty years. Because societal standards have influence our minds to think that one must take responsibility and acknowledge it, people take this idea and warp it into their own perspective making they themselves feel guilty for an idea forced onto them rather than accepting the event and taking the event for granted. The survivor takes the responsibility for the death of their loved one is caused by survivor's guilt. “The Seventh Man” by Haruki Murakami is a short story about a boy losing his best friend during a storm and he goes through a tragic time. Guilt is a result of sin, and sin is a result of misaction. In the novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, the protagonist, Amir, goes on a journey to redeem himself for his sins. When Amir was 12, he witnessed his best friend, Hassan, get raped in an alley. Instead of standing up for his friend, Amir ran away in selfishness and cowardice. The guilt of his choice plagues Amir for the rest of his life, until one day, he gets a call from an old uncle, who tells him that “there is a way to be good again.” (2) The Kite Runner follows Amir on his odyssey to redeem himself for his hurtful actions.
