Bridgette Simmer Honors English 2 Ms. Misko (draft) The Seventh Man Why does it seem like humans always hurt the ones they love the most? This is a question faced as the Seventh man tells his story. In “The Seventh Man”, a young ten year old boy loses his best friend from a giant wave and carries the guilt until he learns how to reconcile from the tragedy. The story provokes curiosity to see if anyone can truly rebound from a life altering tragedy. In “The Seventh Man”, Murakami uses foreshadowing, strong word choice, and symbolism to develop the theme of tragedy and the quest for recovery. Murakami is constantly using foreshadowing to set the mood of the story. For instance foreshadowing is used when the seventh man shares with the reader: “In art class, though, he was great. Just give him a pencil or paints and he would make pictures that were so full of life that even the teacher was amazed. He won prizes in one contest after another, and I’m sure he would have become a famous painter if he had continued with his art into adulthood.” This …show more content…

Some may argue that the wave is the biggest symbol but others may disagree, the wave represents The Sevenths Man's fears but the artwork represents his reconciliation and the object that gave him the chance to start his life over again. K, also was an important symbol, he represented a brother, a best friend and a responsibility the Seventh Man took upon himself to protect and love:. “And because he was so frail, I always played his protector, whether at school or at home.
