We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t text while driving,” but we never truly understand how important those words may be. The Secret Language of Sisters, by Luanne Rice, shows how texting may lead to a near death experience. Tilly sends a simple text, Where are you?, to her sister, Roo. Little did she know that the simple text would change her sister’s life forever. The primary components of this book are the genre, characters, and the author’s writing style. The Secret Language of Sisters goes under the genre of realistic fiction. This book shows the story of a young girl who went through a severe car crash due to texting while driving. Unlike her sister, she had to study like crazy, was always compared to Roo and was never up to par with her sister. Tilly claims that she caused the car accident involving her sister because of a text that she had sent to Roo. Roo is the older sister of the two. She enjoys taking pictures, classes, spending time with her friends, and more. Roo was the perfect student, the pretty one, and the caring one, but one small text changed that all. After suffering from a major head injury, a seizure, and being put in a coma, her life and others’ would never be the same. She was trapped inside of her own body. Roo’s only way of communication was to look up with one of her eyes or use technology to type words on a monitor. This is just one of the many ways that had made everyone’s life more difficult. I do think that the characters are realistic because my friend’s sister had something similar happen to her. The characters are well described. I know this because we can’t get a lot of information from Roo, due to her injury, but we get her thoughts and input from characters describing other characters.
