America has been called many names, such as the melting pot, home of the free, and land of opportunity, but are we truly are we label ourselves as. We are posed with the question as to whether we are a land of opportunity. America was built on the culturally diverse and the immigrants that arrived long ago America stood as a second chance for those who seek a different path then the ones they were on in their home countries. From the beginning, America has embodied freedom of religion and freedom for the pursuit of happiness. As we have grown as a country we no longer care about treating everyone equally as we once did, whether it be from their religion, sexuality, or color of their skin, we don’t treat everyone has they should be treated. While today we have developed, and moved forward from slavery and segregated school and water fountains, racism is still alive in the United States. Recently with the Black Lives Matter movement people are standing up to fight the racism and police brutality. It is not just people of African descent that have recently been targeted by racial profiling. Since 9/11 people of Middle Eastern decent have also been targets of harassment and unwanted attention. According to recent numbers there are as many as 32 million Americans that have been recently profiled (Threat, XIV). America was built on those on different nationalities yet we as their fellow Americans do not treat them the way they deserve, without them would we even be America?
