Monsters are in all of our lives from when we are born to the time we die. They are in the stories that get passed through generations. From the boogie man to the Green River Killer to Dracula. We are drawn to monsters, they make us feel and experience things that we otherwise would not. Monsters are present in both literature and life through fear and power, obsession and violence, and mystery, contrast and disbelief. Fear and power are the most prevalent in why we like monsters so much. This is especially seen in scary movies. The movies that we like the most are the ones that convey the strongest emotion this is because we get a sense of relief afterwards about how what we are watching is not real and we are completely safe. People like to know why. Why are they doing what they are doing? Why act upon their feelings? It is this mystery that we are drawn to. The feeling of mystery and disbelief that makes a person want to know more. This is very common in the hype about serial killers. They live around us we can interact with them in our daily lives but we have no idea who they are. Often times serial killers are very active in their communities and even Bundy worked at a rescue hotline stopping people from committing suicide. There is no way of knowing who is a serial killer which adds to the disbelief. There is a specific type of person who adores monster horror and scary movies and they all tend to have three shared traits: sensation-seeking, above-average aggression and maleness. This can be explained by the fact that our senses are more heightened during a scary movie where we do not know what is going to happen but we are engulfed in the film and are a part of it. Men tend to lean toward that because they are naturally more aggressive from the tribal instincts of man that are no longer necessary in society although they still linger.
