The theme of survival in The Road is love. Without love they would not have made it to the end of the book they would have given up way before then. Throughout this book the boy and father could have decided to give up, but they both kept pushing because they loved each other. The father shows how much he loves the boy and how strong their bond is by always waking up in the middle of the night to make sure the kid is still there sleeping safe and sound. Sometimes the father would go on a walk to find more wood so the boy would not freeze and he would also try and find more food for them to eat. Another example of love is when they ran into some bad guys and the father would always take cover and hold the boy close to him. They had to duck down into some leaves and stay still while trying to listen to what they were saying. The boy was really scared, but the dad always reassured him he was going to be okay. The son may get mad at his father for being overprotective, but the father is just trying to prevent him from seeing things. The father feels he needs to protect the boy from seeing every little thing, but he cannot do that. I feel the father’s protection is helpful for the boy because he is so young he should not be going through what they are going through, but then again, he should be seeing it for himself so when his father passes he knows what to do to survive. The boy does need guidance so when he gets in a situation with the bad guys he knows how to handle them. The father has to do a lot of things in front of the boy like kill one of the bad guys and strip a guy that stole all their food. The father did not want the boy to see those things because the boy always shunned his father after those situations. The father was also over protected because he did not want anything to happen to the boy he wanted to keep him as safe as
