The Title XI dilemma
Title XI is becoming an uprising issue on if it’s necessary to be applied to schools all over country. One side states that Title XI has limited discrimination and opened up opportunities for women. The other side is that Title XI is about quotes and should no longer inhabit sports programs.
Title IX is a piece of United States federal legislation designed to promote gender equality in federally funded educational programs. Though it has been best known for its effects on athletics, Title IX addresses a wide range of educational issues for both genders, including equality in access to higher education, career counseling, and funds and facilities; it also aims to protect students and faculty from sexual harassment.(Aliprandini) …show more content…

One impact is more woman are graduating high school and going to a four year college. Another impact is that it has increased woman getting medical, law and dental degrees. Last is has increased females participating in school athletics by four hundred percent since the passage of Title XI.(Anderson) In recent decades, women have been steadily moving into better jobs and demanding higher salaries. Because of Title IX regulations, schools frequently eliminate men's sports programs in order to balance its gender ratios.(Pearson) This is because fewer female athletes enroll in sports programs, forcing schools to reduce the total number of male athletes in order to achieve proportionality with its female athletes. It pushes women toward traditional male team sports because that is the easiest way for schools to meet the equality guidelines and mandate of "sameness between the sexes."(Pearson) From 1985 through 1996, again according to GAO figures, 21,000 male athletic spots disappeared while women gained 14,500 new places.(Pearson) Schools have cut almost 200 men's wrestling programs along with at least 80 men's tennis teams, 70 men's gymnastics teams, and 45 men's track teams. Title XI made it where there was limited discrimination and more opportunities for women, but if it continues the way it is then there will be discrimination against
