Diverse Perspectives on the Death Penalty

In this paper I will ask three people four different questions about their views on the death penalty. The first question I asked was “Why do you feel the death penalty is wrong?” Question number two, “Does the death penalty help protect the public and discourage crime?” Question number three, “Do you consider the death penalty cruel and unusual?” The final question, “Is the death penalty economically justifiable and cost effective?” My first interview was with Irven Box, a 76-year-old attorney. He started in law enforcement as a police officer, later went to being an assistant district attorney, then became a municipal judge, and finally went into private practice as a defense attorney for over 47 years. He has arrested, prosecuted, and defended people on various criminal offences. When asked, “Why do you feel the death penalty is wrong?” He answered with, “I oppose the death penalty because during a trial, I was defending, this gentleman that was the same age as my son who got a life sentence. As a parent I worry because a lot of cases persons are convicted on an eye-witness testimony, and now statistics show that these are the most imprecise identifications you can get” (I. Box 2016).
