Many studies now show that it doesn’t take a college degree to become successful, but what people define success as is different for everybody. Success in my perspective is being educated in many different areas, being able to support yourself and your family to the best of your ability, and achieving as many of your goals as you can. Sometimes life gets in the way and may make it seem like it’s impossible, but, often times you will find yourself with the advantages that could potentially help you become who you want to be. Her main focus was always me therefore pushing her own education goals aside. Luckily enough my great grandma Etta Mae gladly took care of me during the day while my mom finished her last two years of high school but, then upon graduation decided to put college on the back burner so she could provide for me financially. When my mom was 18 she met my Dad and by 19 they were engaged and my brother was on the way. My dad had also never attended college because he simply didn’t have the motivation for it. In high school, he struggled to pass and felt that that next step in his education wasn’t necessary for him. My parent’s both deeply regret not finishing their schooling and, because of that ever since all of us kids were born, they instilled in us that it was important for us to go to college and succeed in a way that they never did. Even as a small child still in elementary school I would dream about what I thought college would be like for me and what I wanted to do with my life when I was older. They knew they didn’t want to raise a family in a big city so we moved about 30 miles north to a town called Newton, Kansas. Here it was quiet, not too big, and they had heard excellent things about the school system because of the smaller class sizes. This was a huge benefit when it came to my early education because it helped me understand that asking questions is okay, that being confused about something is okay, the teachers would always make it a point to help in every way they could. My freshman year of high school, I had this English teacher and her name was Mrs. Behymer. I have never been fond of English and previously to her class I would always reconsider my motivation. She would make everything about English, so entertaining and easy for us kids to learn that soon into the semester I would learn to walk in with a smile on my face. Not only was she a great teacher, but she was an exemplary role model, she was always there when we just wanted someone to talk to. Lucky for me she moved grades and I had her my Sophomore year of English, and was also her teacher’s aide
