As a people we should keep in mind that, the candidates running for president are very intelligent people who have run successful campaigns. There are two sides to every coin and these two candidates each have their own side of the coin arguing the validity of each. Each side has its own merits and faults, and they have been debated for as long as our nation has stood. Both are valid arguments and we should be conscious of this but one of the candidates does not rise up to the standards of a valid argument. In the United States, the government has been run as a “representative” democracy. With every presidency comes change, however, one thing does not change and that is the State of the Union Address. Every President is tasked with giving a speech to address the state of the country specifically on the economy and the current budget. The speech is supposed to give American citizens a sense of hope, comradery, and belief that the leader of the free world is making every effort to make this country better for all who are apart of it. The Strengths and Weaknesses of the System of Choosing Presidential Candidates It seems reasonable to conjecture that the Achilles' heel of the modern presidency is one of recruitment. The long-winded delegate nomination process could in theory be replaced by a daylong direct election of presidential candidates. Instead, tradition dictates that the presidential race is drawn out quadrennially over the pre-primary, primary, Party Convention and campaign seasons. All four phases influence the outcome of candidate selection and much also depends on campaign finance, the role of the media and the nominees themselves.
Ever since the election season of 1972, presidential primaries have become “the dominant means of selecting the two major party candidates.”i[i] The primary system is one in which the eligible voters of each state do one of the following: 1) Vote for a presidential candidate to run for their party in the general election. 2) Vote for a delegate pledged to vote for a certain candidate at the party’s national convention. As intended, this process would bring the candidate selection processes out into the open and “let the people vote for the candidate of their choice.”ii[ii] On the surface, this may look very democratic (and admittedly, in some instances it was/is), but upon closer examination, it becomes overwhelmingly clear that the candidates are chosen long before the people cast their vote. The culprit: the structure of the presidential primary system.
In the Electoral College system, every state has one electoral vote for each congressman and senator. Congressman is allotted by population and every state has two senators, so Rhode Island, which has basically nobody in it, has three electoral votes. California, with 53 representatives and two senators, has 55 electoral votes. The states choose electors and the electors meet in what is called the Electoral College to pick a president. In practice, nearly every state has passed a law that the electors will all vote for the popular vote winner in their state, but as the Supreme Court said in Bush v. Bush tries to make this decision a little easier in his announcement of candidacy on June 12, 1999 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Like most candidates in an election, Bush’s main purpose is to present his ideas to a large audience and convince them that he is the man that can change the presidency. Governor Bush offers his opinion on free trade, our current military power, and drawing a moral line in politics. Bush speaks elegantly to his intended audience, which consists of his loyal supporters and those interested in changing America’s political scene with a “compassionate president.” At the same time he tends to exclude people who haven’t kept up with his agenda or that are not in the market for significant political transformation. Overall, Bush gives sufficient information to back up his claims. Only reading the speech would not indicate this, but exploring his website provides background information and family history, and is all done with a friendly, inviting tone. The effort made by Bush to run and manage this campaign exemplifies a caring and committed candidate and produces an effective rhetorical argument.
Because Donald Trump wanted to become a Presidential Candidate to shake up America and our way of choosing a Commander in Chief he has taken the focus off of other candidates.
