Have you ever heard the phrase once a thief always a thief? My mom use to always tell me this because most of my friends that I grew up with were misguided, and eventually went on to become full-time criminals. Unfortunately, my friends were taught that aggression is the best way to steal from people. They believed that intimidation control the situation, because people wouldn’t tell on them out of fear. They engaged in actions that would bring more power to their name than currency in their pockets to feel more intimidating throughout the community. They felt cool when people wouldn’t mess with certain people who were closely associated with them because of their “name”. My friends thought process was wrong in the physical form but these …show more content…
Although, hackers can damage a person psychologically, emotionally, and financially, hacking almost never leads to direct physical violence. I believe that hacking is one of those unique tools of life that is considered good or bad depending on what it is being used for. I believe that anything that falls into the right hands and is used for a genuine purpose, can help progress society in a positive light even if the thing in question is deemed bad. For instance, in June of 2013, Edward Snowden, an American computer professional, leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) to the mainstream media in Hong Kong by using the helpfulness social engineering approach, which help him obtain confidential information without physically taken it from the person. Although this was detrimental for the US government’s reputation, simultaneously it was an event that lead to the improvement of security. In addition, if the US had hired Edward Snowden that could use his wrong doing for a right cause. We all have our thoughts about what is wrong and right, but in reality those who are in power of wealth determine what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable. With this in mind, I state the claim that from a creativity aspect no matter whether a product is deemed good or bad,
Most people think hacking is a 21st century art, but in reality it has been around for a little more than a century. (Trigaux 1) Hacking has been relished by the American people as an act of terror when in actuality most hackers stand for the rights and liberties of the people. (Trigaux 2) There is several different types of hackers: The Black Hat, The White Hat, and The Grey Hat each designed with different morals and ethics. (Sterling 1) The “Black Hat” hackers portray the stereotypical identity that the American people are afraid of. (Moore 1) They normally hack for a personal gain or to intentionally place malicious software. (Moore 2) Following that we have a “White Hat” hacker who is
All in all Cyber-security has become a major issue in our generation. Whether it is the ethics behind it or the personal gain. The formal ethical systems that could justify the actions reported in the article were clearly not good enough for a person to preform cyber-hacking. The actions provided in the article went against both the ACM and IEEE codes of ethics. Also the issues of privacy and intellectual property were clearly a damage for many businesses. New technologies should be developed to help prevent cyber-hacking. A better cyber-security should be set in businesses worldwide. This will benefit both the users and the owners. As well as help people understand ethics better.
Ethical hacking supports efforts to have more information about the organization’s system security so this helps to better the organization’s efforts to strengthen security measures against malicious hackers.
In this day and age, technology is more integrated into our lives than ever before. From
References to Beddoes’ hacks (Bisson) evoke resentment among readers; they see that black hat hackers gain more by participating in illicit activities than honest citizens do in a year of work, causing them to feel as if it is unfair to themselves because they are stealing from honest citizens like most readers would be. Also, in emphasizing the damages done by black hat hackers and the mysterious backgrounds they often seem to come from, fuel is added to the fire of an already negative connotation. As the other two articles mention, the common perception of hackers is that they are rebellious teenagers out to destroy the world regardless of the channel used. The background described in this article supports those theories when Beddoes speaks of his past as a teenager who started out with an innocent interest in hacking and then transitions into a rebellious malicious hacker after being rejected by the companies that he was trying to assist. Beddoes’ ethos also supports the goal of the article because he is a credible, well-established hacker in recent years. After almost pulling off a multimillion dollar heist, he is a respected yet accessible authority on the topic. Statistics to quantify the amount of data Beddoes stole in his hacking career provide the base to an argument supported by logos. Referring to those numbers also evokes strong emotions in accordance with the amount of people losing money and being victimized by hackers. Readers are inclined to feel sympathy towards the victims of the hackers, evoking an even greater amount of resentment towards the hackers. The content of Bisson’s article effectively supports a negative reaction to
Hacking and Digital Counter Culture Hacking was first introduced as a new way to embrace and utilize computer technology. Many of the hackers then saw the technology as a way to demonstrate their independence and aims to share this to the public and they used the computer to achieve this. In the last couple of years however, hacking has been given a new connotation. It became connected with criminal and illegal activities, which is totally different from what the hackers had in mind when they initially used and created new technologies.
Imagine this, you are driving along the road and suddenly you see something spectacular. Now imagine that you are not allowed to deviate from your course to check it out. This is what a so-called “hacker” faces. Just imagine that you saw an injured person on the side of the road. In this analogy you are not allowed to help the injured person. A hacker is not allowed to explore like everyone else in the world. A hacker is not allowed to help fix potential security holes. The term hacker can have many meanings. The most visible to the public is the person pirating software, and breaking into corporate networks and destroying information. This is the public misconception of a hacker. Back in the Unix days, a hack was simply a quick and dirty way of doing something. Hackers in those days were basically just computer experts. Nowadays hacker means the same thing as a cracker, a person who pirates software, and malicious hackers. The media, of course, never prints the good things hackers do. Most hackers provide a service to companies, by letting the company know about security holes, before a rival exploits it. Most hackers want nothing more than to simply learn. A hacker has an extreme thirst for knowledge, but not in the traditional subjects. Technology, and anything new interest hackers. In fact most security experts start out but learning and “hacking”. The bad view of hackers is not completely false. There are hackers out there that will do there best to harm any system hey can, but most want nothing more than to find the beauty in system, or network. To hackers vast networks, and the inside of a firewall that was meant to keep them out, are the most beautiful sights on Earth.
The effect of computer hacking can be separated into three types: that on individuals and community, that on economy and that on countries.
Hacker only has 50 years history, computer hacker crime is one of the mots dangerous crime threat at 21th century. Hacktivism is a new class of hacker has emerged, “the so-called hacktivist, who engages in hacking of computer networks and systems as a form of protest”(Hargrave,2012). Hacker crimes have use computer programming skill to make errors on your computer that control your computer to get information and change your computer system. Since in 1970s, computer hackers are called “phreaks”, which mean by phone hacker. Computer hacker is becoming form phone hacker. In the early 1970, Computer hacker is positive to the society, many of computer programmers were “began looking for ways to get the most out of the machines. “(Deivtt,2001) And then, they are created applications called hacks, which are “applications and allow more tasks to be completed in a shorter time.” (Deivtt,2001).In the early 1980.Hackers using computers and the internet for their own questionable gains. The first computer hacker crime is in the 1983.” six teenagers from
Outside of the computing community, a hacker can be defined as someone engaged in the circumvention of computer security. Hacking in this sense has been a largely common feature in popular media for decades now, and, despite the practice repeatedly being portrayed by mass media in a negative light, we seem to have a long-held fascination. I’m going to be examining two separate representations and looking at the wider impact they may have.
Surprisingly, there are hackers with a good moral known as “ethical hackers” or “white hats” that use their skills to help companies and businesses find their weak points. Gray hats are individuals that want to cause destruction and fail. They are not concerned about the serious consequences they might have to go through when caught. Black hats are the individuals with the knowledge, but intentions to cause impairment (Lord). In spite of the white hackers, I think all hackers should be classified as criminals because of the invasion of privacy and using the findings for profit.
In the early years of computers and computerized technology, computer engineers had to believe that their contribution to the development of computer technology would produce positive impacts on the people that would use it. During the infancy of computer technology, ethical issues concerning computer technology were almost nonexistent because computers back then were not as multifaceted as they are today. However, ethical issues relating to computer technology and cyber technology is undeniable in today’s society. Computer technology plays a crucial role in all aspects of our daily lives. Different forms of computer technology provide unique functionalities that allow people to perform daily activities effectively and efficiently. In modern society, we use computer and cyber technology to communicate with friends and family via social networking sites, participate in business transactions, and get current news. Different tasks require unique technological feature in computer technology to function properly. Although, unique technological features increase people’s proficiency in accomplishing various tasks, unique technological features in computer and cyber technology increase security vulnerabilities. In many cases, the security vulnerabilities in computer technology are exploited by cybercriminals to invade people’s privacy, and steal people’s identity. We know that computers have no moral compass; they cannot make moral decisions for themselves. Essentially, people make moral decisions that affect others positively or negatively depending on how they use computer technology. Some of the biggest ethical issues facing people in the computing environment include privacy concerns on the web and identity theft. Privacy concerns...
Hacking has been around for more than a century. Members of the public have had their personal information stolen and passed all over the internet. A hacker is a person who uses computers to gain unauthorized access to data. Like for an example in October 2011 Sony the company that owns PlayStation was hacked by some intruders. The intruders staged a massive attempt to access user accounts on its PlayStation Network and other online entertainment services (Hosaka,2011). ; this is also an example of port scan. Port scans and ping sweep, is very dangerous for companies because it will allow people to hack your network or personal information and create viruses that could do a lot of damage to your computer or network.
Ethical hacking and ethical hacker are terms used to describe hacking performed by a company or individual to help identify potential threats on a computer or network. An ethical hacker attempts to bypass system security and search for any weak points that could be exploited by malicious hackers. This information is then used by the organization to improve the system security, in an effort to minimize or eliminate any potential attacks.
In conclusion, I believe that the act of exploiting computer systems is an ongoing problem that needs to be dealt with respectively. Hacking will always be around as long as computers and other technology based systems are up and in excitant, so therefore types of hackers will benefit on how it the level of hacking is controlled. White hat hackers play a significant role in the hacking community and will lead it towards the better. White hat hacks are no doubt very beneficial and helpful to our society now a days since everything we do involves technology.
