The Guns Are Not The Problem

After the tragic incident at Sandy Hook many were for the banning of firearms in the US; however, after our government has enforced gun safety laws shootings continue to occur. Guns have existed in the United States for a very long time and have affected the course of history. We the people of the United States have the right to bear arms. Our leaders believe that removing them from the country will lead to a better and safer country; however, I am here to tell you otherwise. Banning guns in the US is a terrible idea because it will not keep guns out of the hands of criminals, it will hurt law abiding citizens, and most importantly may leave citizens at the hands of a tyrannical government.
Banning guns in the US will not do anything to help because it will not keep guns away from criminals. According to Richard Felman’s “We Focused On The Wrong Things” 500,000 guns are stolen annually.(Felman, 12) This means criminals will still be able to access guns even if we ban them. Gun safety laws have seemed to do nothing as shown in Washington D.C. According to the article “ Washington D.C.: A Case Study In The Failure Of Gun Control” 25 years after Washington D.C. banned firearms the murder rate is 46.4 to 100,001 which may seem low, but in Arlington, VA right on the other side of the Potomac River from D.C. the murder rate is 2.1 to 100,002 where there is no gun control laws. In conclusion, banning guns in the US will not lead to a safer country because it will not keep guns away from criminals, it will hurt safe gun users, and may leave citizens at the hands of a tyrannical government. The right to bear arms has been intact for over 200 years and should not be taken from us now. Guns are all around and could be stolen by a criminal even if they are banned. People who use guns correctly will be punished for doing nothing wrong, and tyrannical governments have usually begun after gun control was put into effect in other countries. Banning guns from the US is a terrible idea; even though it might seem like a good idea it will not do anything to prevent criminals from doing what they want to do. Banning guns will never help us and it never has.
Gun control is a topic that stirs a strong opinion from the general public. Gun control is the effort to regulate or control usage and sales of guns. The right to bear arms is granted to all Americans by the Second Amendment and many consider it essential to maintain order in the United States of America. Even though this was the Second Amendment right granted to citizens in the Bill of Rights, many Americans opt not to own a gun, and others would like for this right to be abolished altogether. Both sides of this issue have a good argument, but when further researched, there are many more details that come up explain why siding against gun control is a better conclusion for the United States and its people. Some may say gun control should be enforced because it will make the pubic a safer place to be and decrease gun violence. “An average of eight children and teens under the age of twenty are killed by guns every day" ("Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence", 2012). The United States' current president, Barack Obama, is currently working on enforcing and passing more laws and legislation to protect the families and the citizens of the United States. The successful enforcement of our current laws would be a major stride toward decreasing the amount of crimes committed with guns and the amount of criminals with gun possession. The most challenging element of the gun control debate is whether existing gun laws are adequate or whether more gun laws need to be created and enforced.
Many gun control activists believe that the solution is simple; ban all guns and there won't be any crimes committed with guns. Obviously this is not the answer but there are people that believe this would work. There are also a lot of people that know this would never work. The main reason is because criminals are not going to care if the crime they are committing is with an illegal weapon or not. They are already committing a crime, what's one more going to hurt. A majority of crimes committed with guns are committed with illegally bought firearms. If you were to ban guns completely the only people that would not have guns are the laws abiding citizens who want to protect themselves.
Some people believe that extremely tight gun control laws will eliminate crime, but gun control laws only prevent the 'good guys' from obtaining firearms. Criminals will always have ways of getting weapons, whether it be from the black market, cross borders, or illegal street sales. New gun control laws will not stop them. Since the shootings of Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook, the frequency of mass shootings has increased greatly. Gun control is not effective as it has not been shown to actually reduce the number of gun-related crimes. Instead of considering a ban of private firearm possession, and violating individual ownership rights, it may be more practical to consider the option of partially restricting firearm access.
This essay will discuss the pros and cons of gun control. Some U.S. States have already adopted some of these gun control laws. I will be talking about the 2nd amendment, public safety, home safety, and do gun control laws really control guns. In conclusion, enabling stricter gun control laws will help to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, criminals, and children and teens. With these laws put into place there will be more assurance of the safety of American citizens. It is not necessary to strip citizens of their right to own a gun, but we should be able to make it harder to get guns. If you are someone with a clear record and using a gun for recreation use, you will have no trouble obtaining a gun. In the long run increase the laws on gun control hurts nobody. Despite historic events where governments seized firearms and killed millions of citizens, today we have a different problem, which is making sure guns are in the right hands.
Gun control laws aim to restrict or regulate firearms by selecting who can sell, buy and possess certain guns. Criminals do not obey laws and stricter gun control laws or banning guns will have little effect on reducing crimes. There are many myths about gun control reducing acts of gun violence, which are simply not true according to research. People are responsible for the crimes, not the guns themselves. Taking guns away from United States citizens that use them for many reasons, shooting practice, competition, hunting and self-defense, should not be punished for the acts of criminals. As stated by Mytheos Holt, “Guns in the right hands help public safety. Guns in the wrong hands harm public safety”. Research shows that defensive use of guns discourages criminals and reduces crime (Holt 2). Not only is it wrong to penalize law-abiding citizens, it is against the Second Amendment. It is unconstitutional to pass laws that infringe on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Gun control and gun banning have been a highly controversial issue since all the gun crimes hitting the news in America. Crimes like Sandy-Hook , Aurora , San Berdindno , and Oregon have lawmakers thinking about banning guns by enacting laws that allows them to. Lawmakers believe guns are the prime suspect in all these gun violence crimes and they believe it well reduce murder and violence. Banning guns well do nothing to reduce the mass killings. Gun control does not decrease crime. With or without guns people will still find ways to harm others and even with a gun ban people will still find away to either make or buy a gun illegally. With a gun control law in place there is no good way for citizens to protect themselves. Even though some may say it that it will stop some of the crime, there are many reasons that prove that gun control doesn't decrease crime.
The Reasons for the government attempting to ban the vast majority of firearms comes from all the violence that is caused using them. The government’s aim is to make a safer environment for the people. That is a reasonable goal, but most crimes are dealt using illegal firearms. Banning firearms most likely wouldn't cause much of a decline in gun related crime. Majority of the crimes are done by people who have had a prior past of criminal activity. Guns are not the reason for the violent crimes. The crimes are caused by the typical person with a violent past with them. Most people would agree that the firearms they have are used either for recreational activities or home protection in times of need. So they believe that without firearms, they are defenseless. Most will also tell anybody that the weapons aren't the ones causing the harm.
There are arguments that demonstrate that stricter guns laws are the very core of creating a better and safer America. However, it is also true that States such as Chicago with very strict gun laws also have the highest gun related crimes. It is also argued that any of the crimes that happen are done with legally acquired guns. In my opinion, the number of guns that exist in the US are so many that gun related crime is inevitable. Some people believe that taking away guns will reduce or even wipe out the number of attacks or killings. The truth though is that nothing will stop the worlds problems. Even if we take away the guns in the world people are still going to be filled with hate and murder. In fact, if we bans guns in the U.S., how will people defend themselves against a robbery or some other heinous act. The answer is that it wont help.
