I am an avid gun owner and supporter of the second amendment, as most of my community is. I take a firm stance against gun control. Of course I always kept my guns secured when my children were young, but as they grew older, I taught them how to use and have a healthy respect for firearms. Once they became teenagers and could handle a gun safely, I began keeping a gun and ammunition accessible so they could retrieve it in my absence, in case they needed to use it for self-defense. At least I did until I began my research. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in 2015 suicide was the second leading cause of death for ages 15 to 24 (“Injury Prevention” 1). As a result of several recent mass shootings, gun control has become a popular topic. Gun control refers to the laws, background checks, and more protections against mentally ill individuals purchasing firearms. Some of the population believes that gun control should be strengthened, while the others are against it. There have been many situations in which firearms were used to harm innocent people, but gun control is not the solution to the problem we face as a nation.
More than 20,000 children and youth under the age of 20 years old are injured or killed by guns in the U.S. The easy accesses kids have to getting their hands on guns are a major reason why firearms are the second leading cause of death among the youth. The majority of deaths by guns in the youth are homicides. About one-third of them are suicides. Seven percent are unintentional. People living in urban areas such as, older teens, males, African American youth, and Hispanic youth are more likely to be involved in gun homicides. People in rural areas like males and Caucasian youth are more likely to commit suicide. There were 2,711 infant, child, and teen firearm deaths. That’s seven deaths a day.
The author, Noah Smith, overlooks what I consider an important point about how many “gun deaths” are accidental or a suicide. As time has progressed on the amount of “gun deaths” have risen to 32,000 per year. This would leave the annual number of gun suicides at 22,500. Is it any coincidence that the states with the loosest gun laws in America tend to contribute to the highest amount of national gun deaths and injuries? This is one of the main questions we should be asking when deciding what is best for our country and its citizens. The American Dream is being able to work towards and achieve whatever makes you happy, whether it be owning your own business, joining the military, or staying at home raising a family, but the only way to reach your dream is to do it without living in fear that your dream will be taken away. Just because one weapon is taken away, it does not mean that an alternate will not be sought out. And while it may be true that guns are the most utilized method in suicides, they are definitely not the way this tragedy is carried out. While banning guns might cause suicide to become more challenging, it will not prevent the action. If an individual is desperate enough to escape their life and end it, they are not going to keep living just because guns were taken away. They are, unfortunately, more than likely to find another means to granting their wish of death.
