Cow Milk, known as the “sacred drink” might not be so perfect. With many people being taught that milk is healthy and the way to go when giving their kids a drink, people cannot really go wrong with milk can they? Well many may be surprised that a lot of prominent doctors are saying that the consumption of milk is now a huge factor in many diseases in children and adults with health risks ranging from acne and diarrhea to heart disease and even cancer. With all these drawbacks, people still simply keep drinking milk and with that all, false advertising and people not being educated right is certainly to blame. “Doctors say cow's milk can lead to iron deficiency anemia, allergies, diarrhea, heart disease, colic, cramps, gastrointestinal bleeding, sinusitis, skin rashes, acne, increased frequency of colds and flus, arthritis, diabetes, ear infections, osteoporosis, asthma, autoimmune diseases, and more, possibly even lung cancer, multiple sclerosis and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma” (Dye) One of these professionals being Frank Oski, “Director of the Department of Pediatrics of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center” (Dye). What milk is trying to sell when they bring up calcium is they help strengthen your bones but in reality they don’t. But the irony is the person consuming the milk barely absorbs the calcium and to make it even worse, milk actually promotes calcium loss in your bones, which is completely outrageous considering the fact milk is supposed to be one of the leading carriers of the miracle mineral, well around 300mg per cup. How it works is the calcium in our bones is used to neutralize the acidifying effects of milk and once the calcium is pulled out the bones it can never go back and you have to urinate it out. So in the end if this happens too much (drink a lot of milk), you actually go on a calcium deficit and not a surplus which is expected. A calcium deficit can correspond with headaches, irritability and can lead to muscle spasms and cramps and the most serious problem, osteoporosis. “12 year long Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that those who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. This is a broad study based on 77,761 women aged 34 through 59 years of age” (Goldschmidt) There are many of other ways to get calcium besides cows milk and it’s foods like
